I do need to 301 redirect everyone to the www version.

I had "http://ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=...." on a notification at 05/02/2015 10:28. The next notification I received a few minutes after my OP was "http://www.ecforu....". Shame I didn't delay my post for a few minutes...
Base ref was my mistake; I forgot I was on "http://ecforum.org.uk/"
I looked at some old notifications and found the occasional "http://ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=....".
I suspect the base ref of the current poster is used in topic notifications.
So this seems to be normal phpbb behaviour; I assumed a bug because of the recent upgrades.
Feel free to delete from my OP onwards....

A permanent 301 redirect is in place now to help avoid this again.
