That Olympiad may well have tourist appeal, so a plausible number. Don't forget the 12 players, including captains from each of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland plus the 12 from Guernsey and Jersey. You've got arbiters as well. Attendees at the FIDE Congress as well, although they can leave later. There are players resident in the UK playing for non-GB teams as well, potentially able to play at the Championship Congress.

Alex McF was suggesting whether the home nations could contrive to set up a UK circuit of consecutive events, spaced far enough apart to enable travel from one to the other.

I understand what the potential number is, but that was not the question. How many are likely to be at the British and then at the Olympiad?

Looking at previous Olympiad years where there has not been a clash (such as this year), there have not been many. I wonder why anyone would expect 2014 to be any different?

It is clear to me that the British should be scheduled to benefit the vast majority who will go not go to the Olympiad. If that is convenient for Olympians too, great. But if not, it's not a big deal.

I would have though it obvious that, finance permitting, the dates for the British Championship itself should be set so that the leading players can play in both, should they wish. That doesn't have to change the schedule for other events such as the Junior championships.

Has anyone checked this with FIDE? Bearing in mind the current relationship between FIDE and the ECF and the invoice that is about to be (or has been) sent for money believed to be owed as a result of the CAS case then this is certainly worth checking. FIDE has the right to refuse to rate events held in competition to its own. While I would doubt if this would be applied, especially if the Championship finished before the Olympiad, it could be 'a big deal'.

I'm not clear on why the invoice is being sent but it was announced at the General Assembly.

Lara Barnes wrote:The Ideal dates for The British 2014, in my opinion, would be at the start (early that year) of the English Summer holidays: Saturday 19th - Thursday 31st July, with an adjusted time scale (as in the days of the week) of the various events.
It is traditional to have the British starting on a Monday but there is no practical problem that I see in starting it on the Sunday for instance.
The Welsh, Scottish and Commonwealth being before this and at least 48 hours to get to Tromso after the event should please most people.
According to this http://tromso2014.no/ it starts on 1 August and finishes on 14 August

If it follows a simliar schedule as this http://www.chessolympiadistanbul.com/en/schedule.html the first round would be on 2 August

I can't see anyone playing in the British with a potential play off on the 31 July and starting playing in Tromso on 2 August
Any postings on here represent my personal views

At the risk of bringing this thread back on topic, I will point out that Sean Hewitt's election statement has now appeared at http://www.englishchess.org.uk/wp-conte ... ddress.pdf

Playing back to back events is normal for top players when schedules demand it. The French Championships this year were an example, nominally finishing on the 25th, with the Olympiad nominally starting on the 27th.

I think they would if the price was right. Five of the England Olympiad contingent coached at the European Youth which finished on the 25th and then travelled to the Olympiad on the 27th whilst four members of the World Junior squad flew direct from Athens to Prague for the European Youth with only one travelling day inbetween the two schedules.

In light of this report on the ECF website, I believe we may have found our new President.

Oh no, this simply will not do. It's outrageous. I have never met this man, but he shows disturbing signs of possessing commercial nous. He understands that "Cash is King". He even knows what the function of a non-executive is. Good grief, he may even be competent!

He is a dangerous revolutionary and must be exposed as such forthwith.

But will he resign on a point of principle somewhere along the line? :P
