Certainly I don't much blame the Middlesex captain. Quite possibly one half of his team accepts that they lost whilst the other half of the team, if forced to express their views, might take the view that if they won according to the rules, then so be it. As he says himself, it is something of a metaphysical question what to do when the spirit of the competition conflicts completely with the rules.
But this is why I asked yesterday whether he consulted his players before challenging the result. It seems not and instead we are left with the rather messy answer that although he raised the crucial membership point, he hadn't intended to challenge the match result.
What a mess!
I don't blame the Middlesex captain either. In an earlier comment, in my opinionated way, I picked up on something which was stated which I thought was hogwash.
I am concerned, instead, about the actions of the Controller of the event as it seems that:
1. The Controller, and not Council, was responsible for rules which seem to me to be Draconian and which have seriously affected this year's competition;
2. The Controller didn't own up to (1) and allowed blame to be unfairly cast in the direction of Council.
FWIW, there is another matter concerning the national stages of the County Championships which hasn't been reported in this thread. An appeal was made against the draw for Open section of the competition. An alternative and better draw (I and others believe) was proposed (which kept the two northern teams in separate halves of the draw and which gave the second SCCU county a less hard draw on paper than the third SCCU county). The appeal was summarily dismissed by the Controller as it was submitted three days after the announcement of the draw - a day late under the rules (though there was nothing to stop a redraw).
