So it is Aberystwyth as rumoured.

The next issue will be the scheduling of events, given the overlap with the start of the Olympiad.

Another beautiful part of the country I've always wanted to visit. I'll need to see what else crops up in 2014 but hopefully I'll be there

Looks like it's a week earlier than usual.

Have the Scottish decided on dates for their Commonwealth Championships?

How does the british champs work? Can I enter in a minor type section? Or is it all by qualifying. I may as well pop along next year as it's in Wales.

All events, and there are a multitude, are open to everyone except where there is an age or grade restriction. That's with the exception of the main 11 round Championship for which qualification is required unless your rating is high enough or you have a title. The Major Open runs in parallel with the Championship, so everyone can play in an eleven round tournament if they wish. Otherwise most adult tournaments are over 5 rounds, either Monday to Friday or at the middle weekend. You can play both morning and afternoon as well.

Eleven rounds over two weeks - not very friendly to people who work for a living, especially when there are competing tournaments with nine or ten rounds over a nine-day period that includes two weekends.

Of course, that helps explain why it is held during the traditional holiday season.......

Are the dates correct '19th July and 3rd August 2014'

This is before the state schools break up (unless you are in Scotland it seems)!

Shaun (Dad of a junior currently playing in Torquay, he will be gutted if he is not able to play next year).

I believe it is earlier due to the clash with the Olympiad, but somebody more official should be able to confirm

Or in Bolton - my daughter finishes Thursday 17 July 2014 and I expect the other state schools finish that week too

State schools down here in the south east break up 23rd July.

Noticeable that the dates given run 16 days starting on a Saturday, which may suggest a cunning plan to front-load the main event to fit the Olympiad, and maybe back-end other events, i.e. hopefully the juniors.

It does look like there is some variation even in England, I checked a few regions and had not spotted any state Schools breaking up that early.

I have looked at few more examples by area

Bedfordshire - 18/7/14
Berkshire - 23/7/14
Bristol - 22/7/14
Buckinghamshire - 23/7/14
Cambridgeshire - 23/7/14
Cheshire - 24/7/14
City of London - 22/7/14
Cornwall - 24/7/14
Cumbria - 18/7/14
Derbyshire - 23/7/14
Devon - 25/7/14
Dorset - 22/7/14
County Durham - 18/7/14
East Sussex - 23/7/14
Essex - 22/7/14
Gloucestershire - 22/7/14
Manchester - 22/7/14
Hampshire - 23/7/14

okay think that's enough, looks like the large majority do not break up in time

Shaun
