"Flintoff's brother even played chess for England"
According to this piece in the Grauniad a couple of weeks ago.
Is this claim in any way based on reality?

"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

To the best of my knowledge Chris Flintoff played for the England U11 team.
According to http://www.cricinfo.com/wisdenalmanack/ ... 55374.html Freddie himself played for Lancashire U11s.

Cheers Richard. Do you know when that would be, who against, whether he ever had a grade and that sort of thing?

Not sure. I can try to look up the grading info for you.
I presume it was one of these EPSCA matches. EPSCA have for many years run U11 international matches. The top players sometimes get trips abroad but there are also matches against Wales for those who don't make the main team. So every year 20-30 U11s get the chance to play for England.

If you're able and it's not too much trouble. The author of the piece has been kind enough to reply to an email I've sent her on the subject so I'd like to get all my information straight.

Maybe Flintoff could be contacted re: Presidency? He's retiring from Test cricket, so he'd be available...

I have a very good friend who is an offical cricket scorer and attends many
of these matches. I've fired off an email to see if she (yes it's a she) can get a contact.

I'm afraid I don't have the information you require. I only have national lists from about 1988 onwards, before that union grades were published separately so I only have the SCCU lists. Christopher Flintoff's birth was registered in Preston in the 3rd quarter of 1974 so you'd need the NCCU lists for the mid 1980s. I suppose Richard Haddrell might have them, alternatively you'll need to speak to the Lancashire/NCCU grading people.

I haven't got any NCCU lists. There are no Flintoffs in the (rather thin) 1986 BCF list.Richard James wrote:I suppose Richard Haddrell might have them, alternatively you'll need to speak to the Lancashire/NCCU grading people.

Somewhat related, I heard Adam Gilchrist interviewed on Radio 5 this morning, he was talking about how competitive he is and mentioned playing chess against his dad when he was young.
