Goodness knows. The thing is that they'd already checked him enough - quickplay and no obvious means of consultation with any device involved for starters! - that if he was cheating before he would have had to be doing it in some very sophisticated manner. Something like that might very well get through even these checks.

A secondary test is to monitor whether his playing style with its high engine match up has changed, although as pointed out in the Ken Regan paper on marbles, that isn't conclusive evidence.

And a loss in Round4 to a strong GM - so 2.5/4 now.

Followed by 2 wins v's 2100's, so now 4.5/6. White against Dlugy in round 7.

The Round 4 loss on Board 5 to Vladimir Petkov (2564) was annotated on the server http://chess-results.com/partieSuche.as ... 08160&rd=4

Ivanov's draw with GM Saric (published on page 35 of this thread) was full of tactical creativity and looked like at least a 2400-2500 player with White. Whereas his loss the very next round was quite banal, and near the end when Petkov, a pawn up, allowed a simple drawing chance Ivanov didn't see it.
So with the same brutal anti-cheating measures in place in successive games, Ivanov arguably bypassed them in one game and failed to do so the next.
The mystery continues......

He's a twin.

The 'doctored' twin plays in the even numbered rounds.

I'm staring at the final position just copied from the game Borislav lost.

(Borislav, Black to play, Black resigned.)

After 51...a2 there appears (to me anyway) some chess left in that game.
I can get the White pawn to c7 but cannot the Black Knight just dance
around it when the White King approaches.

The Bishop is tied to a1.

Geoff,
Thanks for this posting, I was beginning to think it was just me who couldn't see why he resigned.

Hi Mathew

Endings and me don't go all that well together so never been afraid to ask of I don't know.

I thought I missing some cute point like you get the King across to the Queenside before pushing the c-pawn.
I take it that does not work, it does not look on.
Unless I/we are missing a mighty zugzwang I think he should have played on.

Maybe time was a factor.
Do the Eurpeans have this sob-sob rule where the player who has used up his time can
put up hand and claim a draw because it cannot be won.
Is this get out of jail clause on the FIDE books?

Important fresh developments:

In Round 7 GM Maxim Dlugy defeated our hero by default after the latter refused to remove his shoes for a search.

See http://chess-db.com/public/pinfo.jsp?id=2903741 (scroll down to the Discussion section).

However, contrary to Dlugy's suggestion that Ivanov would be banned from the event, Ivanov is in the pairings for Round 8.

It's worth just pasting up Dlugy's full posting just to see what a farce this has become:

Max Dlugy "Just finished off an infamous chess player FM Borislav Ivanov without making a move! He absolutely refused to take off his shoes during a search, which according to tournament regulations at Blagoevgrad Open was allowed before any round. It was explained to him that refusal would mean a forfeit and a disqualification from the tournament , but he said he wouldn’t do it because his socks smell. Hopefully he will have clean socks next tournament, if someone else will accept him. In that case I would recommend searching his jacket which he put aside just before the search."

That is the 2nd time he has refused a search.
He is not doing himself any favours and feeding the flames of specualtion.

Rigged shoes would be very easy to receive.
Small pinhole vid unit relaying the moves.
Four 'buzzes' left shoe and three 'buzzes' right shoe = d3.

I take it no one has found how White wins the final posted above position.
So....

(1) The game can be won by White by force and me (and others) are to dumb to see it.

(2) Loss on time.

(3) Saw it was difficult/drawn but resigned to throw off the witch hunt.

(4) Message received that computer thinks White is much better.
(It should because White has an extra pawn and 7 pieces are out of Table Range.....Are they?)
Also notes from posted link give White a plus at the final position so the lad adding
the notes simply cut and pasted computer vomit without actually looking at the position.

(5) Computer messages blocked in latter stages of game due to random blocking device
employed by organisers. (suspect this was a bluff. maybe-maybe not.)

(6) Borislav is as crap as me at endings and resigned in a drawn endgame.
(Though I never resign until the last trick has been played and as I said, there is still some Chess left in that game.)

(7) Big Deal. Players resigning in drawn/won positions is nothing new.

Just seen an alleged scanned copy of Ivanov's scoresheet against GM Maxim Dlugy. Ivanov as you'll recall was Black and as Geoff says above appeared to resign in a drawn position. Ivanov did not record any moves and it says in Bulgarian

"White: The Machine Black: Some Clown".

Bizarre.

Not quite right, Chris.

Ivanov lost by default against Dlugy after he refused to remove his shoes for a search. Ivanov was White, so he was the machine and Dlugy the clown.

The game in which he resigned in an apparently drawn position was against GM Vladimir Petkov.

I am not sure many of Geoff's possible explanations are really credible. It looks like they have 30 second increments and I don't think anyone is saying Ivanov has zero chess ability and a player of almost any standard could play the best moves for Black. The mystery continues, but I do expect Ivanov to arrive to his next match/tournament shoeless.

Thanks David, I completely agree with your correction. The reference to GM Maxim Dlugy as "some clown" is extremely insulting and more so after the "apologies" he offered up earlier to Danailov in that letter where he'd effectively said he learned his lesson and he regrets insulting various chess players.
