Death match

Hello,

I've come across something, that for me is new, so perhaps it might be new for others.

It is something chess.com has done and might be the start of more money coming to players.

I found out about it on Chess Vibes you can read the article here.

Termed a bit melodramatically, a 'Death Match' between Judit Polgar and Nigel Short on chess.com, Short lost, but was still paid $250, whilst Judit was paid $750 for her win. I wonder how they will check for hanky panky, afterall if players will resort to computers in their shoes, what else will they get up to?

Chess.com have been organising these Death Matches for some time now but as far as I know this is the first time that they have had such strong GMs playing in them.

Yes I was aware Chess Vibes had become part of Chess.com, for me the new bit was, two GMs playing from home on the 'Net and getting paid for it, even if they lost, hopefully the start of a new trend.

Oh I missed those two matches. I think that they are a brilliant idea, but I don't really like the term "Death Match".

I caught some of the Short-Polgar natch on Saturday afternoon and it was very entertaining stuff, though spoiled somewhat by a few kibitzers spamming the whole time. Difficult for the organisers to stamp out that sort of thing.
