Did Peter Gayson default again today or is he not there in which case presumably White Rose's board 6 should have been playing on board 5.

Unlike an English league, which would have a rule to push a default to the bottom, I'd suspect the rules for this competition require players to always be in the nominated order. White Rose only have six declared players, so a default takes place on the nominated boards. Both Barbican and Jutes have reserves.

Bizarrely though they seem to have extra players out there but not registered to play in the event

If anyone wishes to congratulate Barbican and Jutes of Kent in each recording wins over teams in the top half of the list today, don't let anything stop you!

Simon's game involved one of his periodic touches of genius, but all the Jutes top four boards played excellently and Ezra Kirk has been better/winning in every game now. Barbican had to turn around their match after falling into trouble on boards four and five, with mainly slight advantages only elsewhere, but did so by refusing a draw where there was still some play left (to win board 3) patient defence (to hold board 5) and finally launching a calm counterattack when our opponents then tried too hard on board two. Most of the Barbican players now have equal scores or plus scores (Chris Dorrington) and those who don't have each had the misfortune of losing from an excellent position.

Fair to suggest that Barbican and Jutes have had rather different fortunes with the round four pairings, though. Every time we play this event the rules on pairings seem to be different, and never to our benefit!

Breaking news and quite unexpected is that our board 4 Tony Stebbings with his win yesterday reached the magic mark of 2300 and a few minutes ago was presented with a certificate from the Chief Arbiter confirming his rating for his FM title. Well done Tony!!!!
