Which ones? Rook endings can be hard for engines to grasp because they don't necessarily get that pawn up (or two) isn't necessarily a win.

Machines which access tablebases when they get to a six-piece ending are a different story

It doesn't matter how good Anand's team is at preparing the openings, they can't prepare for all of the endings!

Carlsen is doing the right thing by playing nice, safe opening lines and then looking for a tiny endgame advantage,

I don't reckon; on the contrary I think this is over. Anand needed to take the lead to draw Carlsen out. As things stand Carlsen's much the stronger player and has the lead; unless Anand can catch him in the opening with White I can't see a way back for him.

I'm not sure he'll mind that as much as the 'being 1-0 down' pressure.

You'd have to think Anand's confidence will be a bit dented by this game, perhaps together with the latter endgame bit of the last one. He looked a bit rattled by the nuances and tricks Carlsen conjured up in the apparently dead 2Rs v 2Rs ending of game 4, and today Carlsen showed he could beat Anand in the ending from a simplified position which was pretty much dead level at move 40.

You'd think Anand would have to try and complicate in the (late) opening and middle game in his next two Whites, as that seems to be his best shot at beating Carlsen. Wonder if we'll see 1. e4 and the Berlin Wall again?

I can't see that really, Carlsen has proved that he can hold the Berlin endgame.
Anand needs a sharper opening line, maybe he has a surprise waiting.
