If in October you announce that there will be a calendar of events taking place in 2014, that hasn't appeared over two months later, you will get questions from regular players in e2e4 events such as Barry as to when there will be announcements on forthcoming events.John Upham wrote: I suspect he sees this thread as being rather like the popular quiz hosted by Andrew Armstrong and Richard Osman.

Have you considered Lion taming as a career change?Roger de Coverly wrote: If in October you announce that there will be a calendar of events taking place in 2014, that hasn't appeared over two months later, you will get questions from regular players in e2e4 events such as Barry as to when there will be announcements on forthcoming events.

I'd prefer to see Zurab Azmaiparashvili vs Lennox Lewis
Bob Noyce would also be competitive.
but if RDdeC plays table tennis...

Is Bob still around? I played a couple of BUCA tournaments with him circa 1989/1990. (Although, if truth be told at this late stage, I never did manage to find a teammate who could explain Bob's connection to the University).John Upham wrote:I'd prefer to see Zurab Azmaiparashvili vs Lennox Lewis

I think he plays in the Sussex area, more specifically Haywards Heath.Jonathan Bryant wrote: Is Bob still around? I played a couple of BUCA tournaments with him circa 1989/1990. He was very accomplished at kick-boxing and a strong chess player. Maybe Tim Woolgar (Wulfgar according to the BBC) has made contact?

Bob played on and off for Crawley and then for Haywards Heath over the last 10 years or so (generally alongside Chris Baker). Not sure he's played much recently, but he is currently active with Sussex junior chess, running training etc in Crawley and Haywards Heath.John Upham wrote:I think he plays in the Sussex area, more specifically Haywards Heath.Jonathan Bryant wrote: Is Bob still around? Re: e2e4 Chess
In relation to the post made by Jonathan Bryant I believe that Bob Noyce lived in the Southampton area until moving to Crawley with work in 1997. I also think that he played for Southern Water in the Southampton Chess League from 1989 to 1997, and may have played for Southampton University the season before that.
I do know that he once worked for the University and played for the University staff team in the Southampton Chess League, but if he was ever a student at the University it would not have been at a time when I was living in the Southampton area.

I know he played for Southampton University in the National Club Championship in the 87/88 season because I played him.Malcolm Clarke wrote:I believe that Bob Noyce lived in the Southampton area until moving to Crawley with work in 1997. Bob currently plays for the Redhill 1st team in the Surrey league, and sometimes play on one of the top boards for the 2nd team. His grade at the moment is 185.

Thanks for this. I was at Southampton 1989 to 1992 and went to BUCA (or was it BUPCA by then?) in 1990 and 1991 I think. I have fond memories of Bob entertaining everybody at team dinners, one story that has stuck in my mind for some reason concerned a fight that he got into with a couple of guys at a bus stop.
We certainly had staff members in the team as well as students so perhaps that explains the connection.
Bob had a brother Ken didn't he? I'm pretty sure I played him in a league match one time.

I believe the occasion was the purchase of refreshments from a mobile kebab outlet.
His party was being hassled by uncouth fellows and so he "performed a simul" of kickboxing as a method of subjugation.
He laid them all out.
