Getting your pieces off the back rank? You don't need to do that to win:

I am enjoying the live games although I would rather not have to endure the tweets on the right hand side of the page - particularly those posted by a chap called Brian!

Me too. I have taken to resizing the window so the irritating Twitter feed doesn't appear.John Moore wrote:I am enjoying the live games although I would rather not have to endure the tweets on the right hand side of the page - particularly those posted by a chap called Brian!

Entertaining game from Jack today. Not often you win as black in 46 moves without touching the a8 rook, with his other remaining piece joining the action on move 37, when his king was on c3.

I like the pairing they've given to Sophie Milliet. Has she drawn it yet?

Drawn in 27 moves after a threefold claim. A marathon compared to board oneIhor Lewyk wrote:I like the pairing they've given to Sophie Milliet. Has she drawn it yet?

Today's puzzle: why did black resign in the final position?

The threat of Qxd8+ looks ominous.

Why can't Black play Qe3, with threats of Qxb3+?

Or other Q moves.Alex Holowczak wrote:Why can't Black play Qe3, with threats of Qxb3+?
I'm guessing Black actually picked up the rook and d2 intending to take on c2, then noticed Qxd8 mate as Brendan said, and finally realized too late that any other move by that rook loses.
