These days, after the Hastings debacle, I now recommend shading the requirements of the opening spade bid to 0-4 any distribution, rather than 0-6. I am trying to get both the ECF board and FIDE to agree to this modification.

The Biafran Spade is a counterintuitive bidding concept, in the sense that nobody sane would ever use it. A cornerstone is the use of a forcing pass to confuse even the strongest of opponents and another high point is the one spade opener, currently 0-6 points, regardless of distribution. When partner opens one spade, the message is clear: basically, we are screwed.

I call upon Gary Kasparov to adopt the Biafran Spade as his official bidding system in the final run up to the 2014 FIDE elections, or just accept that he is going to finish in second place.

I still dont really see what crime has been committed by the president, other then supporting the wrong fide candidate (which, apparently, it was no secret that he was in league with before he took office).
Is that what this basically boils down to or are people trying to be "diplomatic" and not reveal the real atrocities in public?

Much the same applies to the ECF President, as a voting membership, overweight in arbiters, if the pun can be forgiven, is unlikely to be convinced by advocacy which excuses taking moves back and ratings fraud.

There does seem to be a distinct amount of Kasparov hatred around. Is this for his numerous supposed crimes against chess or perhaps just FIDE, or some shady pro-Putin lobby looking to discredit him?

For those who are still unsure: I do not support and never have supported either Ilyumzhinov or Kasparov for President of FIDE. I have publicly stated that I advocate abstention to demonstrate disapproval of both (except in a humorous barb to Nigel in ChessDom that he had convinced me that abstention is not democratic, in principle). It goes without saying that my opinion/vote is but one of 9 votes on the ECF Board which instructs the FIDE Delegate on how to vote in ECU and FIDE elections.

I dunno about "hatred", Roger, but there is this: Kasparov has been in chess for a very long time now and it's striking how few people seem to like him, trust him or say it was a pleasure to work with him. Don't you think?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I got a better idea John. Why doesn't the BCM contact the people who supported Paulson in the election and ask why they never asked themselves any pertinent questions when they did so? (It'd go double for any of them who were also enthusiastic about CJ.)

Meanwhile, perhaps it's worth thinking about this. Paulson's long and lurid screed makes, among other things, a couple of really serious allegations against Danailov.

If these allegations are true, Danailov should be in serious trouble. If they're false, Paulson should be in serious trouble.

It kind of matters to find out what's true and was isn't, doesn't it?

(I mean apart from the entertainment value of the whole feud. I can't offhand think of anything quite like it. We've got seven weeks to come of this sort of fun and games?)

Hamlet (to Ophelia) -

Doubt that the sun doth move,
Doubt truth to be a liar,
But never doubt I...

Indeed, or as an article in the New York Times put it:
Are his stories the unvarnished truth? Maybe. Maybe not, but it doesn’t really matter, said Julia Idlis, a Russian writer who chose Mr. Paulson as her subject when asked by a Moscow theater to write a play about someone who made a mark on the tech sector.

It is interesting - to me at least - that nobody seems to expect anything of the chess press on the whole Paulson/ECF debacle other than the absolute zero that has been delivered to date. From the lamentable interview with Andrew Paulson that CHESS magazine published long before his entry into Presidential race to today's tacit confession that the BCM is incapable of performing acts of journalism itself, it has been another poor show from ‘our' chess print media.
