It's the running joke up here, after Scotland gets it's Independance England shall hence forth be known as Southern Scotland.

I keep wondering how long it'll be before the north of England does become southern Scotland
The armies were a reference to a board game, although I'd be trying for a mass convoy move to Tunis on the way Bulgaria/Constantinople myself. Might do some good

Must be an old-fashioned game then as Constantinople has become Istanbul since - to Europe's lasting shame - it fell to the Turk.

That hadn't occured to me. Must be European cultural bias showing through. Its a ~1st WW setting and has the Ottomans of course, but also still Constantinople instead of Istanbul. Turkey do at least got a pretty strong position in gameplay terms!

There's a William Hill advert running on Spanish TV currently which briefly features a bloke playing chess. Can't find it on YouTube yet, though.
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

I've just stumbled across this Saturday Night Live sketch on YouTube: Chess for Girls.
Obviously that could never happen. Could it?

I know junior organisers who would think that video is exactly true! Apparently it is a bit soul-destroying trying to teach when some of the little girls are putting the knights back in the box and saying "horsey goes in stable"

The California floods have washed out the weekend's beach chess - you don't get this at Margate!

In a monologue denouncing Russia's military presence in Ukraine, Abby Martin (host of Breaking the Set on RT) compares Ukraine to being a pawn in a giant global chess game.
True glory lies in doing what deserves to be written; in writing what deserves to be read.

It didn't tell us anything the well-informed wouldn't know already - it's a fantastic new sport that's really taking off

It's Ravel Day on Radio Three and their Twitter account informs us:
Ravel fact: In 1924 he played chess with Prokofiev! The battle of the board has been recreated on Youtube.
Is the game straight up?
