The games seem to be interesting so far... If anyone wants to join for the next match - perhaps at the start of August, just use the links at the start of the thread.

As you can see, I've made a huge amount of progress with my games...

I wonder what happened on Board 3 where White apparently resigned after 1 move?

The resignation is attached to board 2, which has had considerably more than 1 move.

Oh yes, you're right, that would be Jack Rudd of Trinidad and Tobago?

My games (bd 4) seem to be going along OK so far. Seems they (we?) are either moving quite quickly or not at all...

Trying to make the "Tiger Modern" work against the Austrian attack might be that little bit too provocative.

(edit) Having now looked this up on the database, the normal idea is to hit in the centre with c5, in some cases even before e5 has been played. You were in fact following an old Julian Hodgson game up to move 10, at which point your opponent varied with his eleventh move.

Ahem..well yes, i thought somebody might suggest trying a different opening! It was an experiment which just seemed to leave me positionally doomed from the get-go. Perhaps a better opening for rapid/blitz than "correspondence".

20. ... Nc8 Seems almost terminally passive. I'd have been very tempted by 20. ... Bxe4, followed by Nf5 and Nd5.

Nc8 appears a tactical mistake, as the engine indicates 21. Nf6 as winning. After that wasn't played the engine says that White is always better, but not decisively so. Even in the final position, Black can fight on with 30. .. h5 31. Qxf7 Kh7. The pawn on e6 isn't immediately vulnerable because the Bishop on a5 is hanging.

Taking on b6 seems to win eventually. Just playing through "indicated best lines" suggested a plan of exchanging the e pawns, then queens and forcing a Zugswang or two in the Rook v Bishop ending. I thought it a bit co-operative to take on e5, only to have to give back the e6 pawn when the Queen and Rook ganged up on it.

I was too optimistic about my position and 'switched off' Bxe4 as a possibility, as i thought the unopposed light square bishop was too strong. I can't allow Nd6 and Nc8 just lost, as I noticed straight after playing it - so your continuation must be correct.

Whoops, yes didn't consider h5 as a possibility?! Thanks.

Thanks. My opponent made quite a bad mistake with 17. Bh6 - the rest was pretty straightforward.
