World Seniors Championship - Vilnius, Lithuania
The web site for this is now up. http://vilnius2014.com/
Stewart said he intended to send a strong team and I had a little look on the FIDE list of English active players 50+ (ie not Hodgson, Mestel, Nunn, Keene, Stean etc) and got the following "best" team which normally consists of 4 players and a reserve:
1. Mark Hebden 2550
2. Jon Speelman 2495
3. Jim Plaskett 2495
4. Glen Flear 2488
5. Keith Arkell 2460
Given that our board 5 is the current European Seniors Champion its not a bad line up if available.

Good luck to all the England teams starting this team tournament. The new 50+ definition has brought some refreshingly strong English players into the reckoning.

Re: World Seniors Championship - Vilnius, Lithuania
It looks like a two horse race between Lithuania and England, who each won their first round 4-0; which is nice as far as our medal chances go, but since the winner is decided on matchpoints it probably means that only one day of the nine is important and one wonders whether everyone in the top two teams will get a bit fed up beating 2150s.
Even so, it would be nice to win it! Keith Arkell plays on board one as the European seniors champion, even though Plaskett is higher rated.

England 3 in the Over 50s has become England 2 in the Over 65s.
It's an all play all of 10 teams

Always got to watch out for the Georgian women. I just switched on to find John Cox a rook down for next to nothing - now 0-1.Jonathan Rogers wrote:It looks like a two horse race between Lithuania and England, who each won their first round 4-0; which is nice as far as our medal chances go, but since the winner is decided on matchpoints it probably means that only one day of the nine is important and one wonders whether everyone in the top two teams will get a bit fed up beating 2150s.

Those Georgian women are stupidly underrated, but we got there in the end. I was playing Nona Gaprindashvili, Women's World Champ 1962 - 1978, and the first ever woman to be awarded the GM title.
Very frustrating to have not completed the job on move 39 because of time trouble, but always a pleasure to play these chess legends:

Hope you are enjoying the event, and indeed Vilnius itself
As long as the team wins, that's fine, you are all bound to have games that don't go to plan and some matches will be tough I expect
Good luck

I can hardly believe it but apparently Nona Gaprindashvili has tweeted in Georgian (sorry, don't have the link)
"I actually got to play Keith Arkell today - and I forgot to ask him to sign my copy of his autobiography!!"

She was probably so relieved at not having to play out a rook ending against the maestroJonathan Rogers wrote:I can hardly believe it but apparently Nona Gaprindashvili has tweeted in Georgian (sorry, don't have the link)
