Hope Nigel managed to avoid the flying Black Queen that seems to have ended up on g1

I picked Grischuk because he's the only 2700+ who seems to get into time trouble as much as Howell.LawrenceCooper wrote:Given that Grischuk has just beaten Caruana with black that's quite a tough act to follow.JustinHadi wrote:Richard, of course, whether Howell has raised his level closer to a Grischuk is what a Black win would have shown.

Read about Alan Merry's superb performance (2624) and a first GM norm to go with his final IM norm at http://www.suffolkchess.org.uk/2014/10/ ... f-man.html.

Merry's rd 7 game, which can be played through on Bob Jones' blog, is quite something.

Any chance of the link? It's late and I'm tired.

It's in the Suffolk chess bit given by Bob Jones in the immediately preceding post. Very impressive it is too.Mike Truran wrote:Any chance of the link? It's late and I'm tired.

Wider circulation, as requested. All the games in the masters are available on the IOM site. As others have said, it is not an easy thing to use but the route is 2014 Tournament -> Masters. Look for the drop down box saying pgn. Select the file containing a number referring to the desired round. This is a multi-game pgn file from which you can cut and paste the required game. Simples.

Thanks Michael, extraordinary world class performance(s) from Alan. At a Golders Green FIDE-rated event in August I was very pleased to come second equal to him. However, this was primarily because I was lucky not to get paired with him! Watching his games from neighbouring boards was awesome, he wasn't so much beating opponents as seemingly teaching them how to play chess. He's utter class.

He's come on a lot since I played him at Golders Green!

Didn't realise that was an IM getting brutalised like that. Yikes.

Wonder why Alan will not be playing in the europeans in Batumi, Georgia, October 18th – 29th and he did not play in the worlds .I do hope it was not because of the cost of these events.
when you are successful many losers bark at you.
