Re: Scarborough 2014
Good stuff Scary game on board 1 this morning.
With that somehow ending in a draw I guess there's a fairly enormous pile up on 3.5/4 for the final round.

Re: Scarborough 2014
I think all 7 are already qualified for the British, 6 by virtue of being IMs or FMs above 2200, and Webb by his ECF grade. That means the numerous players on 3.5 will have qualified.Alex McFarlane wrote:351 entries

Re: Scarborough 2014
All of them? Fun Webb (M) definitely qualified by ECF.
It would be a considerably saner event in an objective sense if they introduced a 'super major' (171-190 or something) to take some of the load off the Open but you'd obviously very much hesistate to mess with anything getting this many entries!

Well, yes, it does seem as though those 2 players scoring 4.5/5 in the Intermediate section had a better return than the 3 players who scored 4.5/5 in the open. The potential financial returns from chess congresses have always been very limited for those players above say 170 - no grading limited sections to enter, but never likely to win an open. Years since I competed in a congress, but nothing seems to have changed. Of course, nobody plays for the money

Re: Scarborough 2014
Well the open/intermediate winner difference was basically random - 71 players in each. They've had everything from (quite rare) single winners in the open before now to a rather epic 8 way tie in the major last year....
The 'issue' is more that there's simply far too many players in each grouping for a 5 round swiss - this year you could easily have had four players reaching 4.5/5 in the open with them having played (iirc) *one* game against each other. Not crucial in grading limited sections, considerably less ideal for an open with potentially seriously imbalanced fields etc.
Not that I imagine anyone cares that much Suppose the 200(210)+ players might well have liked to play each other a bit more.
Not that important and a very impressive event.

Re: Scarborough 2014
Is there an official total for the number of entries? Alex's post above said 351 entries but the website says there were 356. This could be significant as according to the Blackpool congress website their event had 353 players taking part.

The website is correct. The total was 356. I mistyped as I was hurrying out this morning.
Sorry.

Re: Scarborough 2014
We've done a report of the Congress on the Yorkshire website.
Scarborough Chess Congress 2014 Report
No crosstables yet, they'll be up on the Yorkshire Chessnuts site at some point, but there's an enormous amount of results to process!

The new "clock substitution" rule in Appendix G was announced as being in force. Did anyone attempt to take advantage of it by making a disputed claim that their opponent was "unable or not attempting to win .... "?Alex McFarlane wrote:The Scarborough website has more pictures from this years event thanks to Nigel Hepworth and full cross tables thanks to Jon Griffith and Chessnuts.

No-one made a claim at Scarborough nor at the British Rapidplay this weekend.
I mention this in an article for BCM
