Agreed but it would have disadvantaged another player to have broken the pairing which would not have been fair, especially so close to the top of the tournament.
Indeed. It could also have invalidated any norms achieved at the event.

I certainly didn't intend any criticism of the controllers. These sort of pairings are occasionally unavoidable.

Where's John Anderson this afternoon - or is that live board not working.

Bob Eames will be a bit fed up with his choice of opening against Mark Hebden, I guess. 6 Qe2 is breathing new life into the venerable Staunton gambit against the Dutch. Maybe you have to go 8 .. gf6.

I was just about to say that! Potentially bad news for Leningrad Dutch players, who have no option than to play ...f5 on move one.

Flear v. Flear Draw, quite understandable.

Excellent end game play by Robert Bellin. Worth looking at.

After four rounds we have a sole leader in Chinese player Jun Zhao on 4/4. Can't say he's ever come up on my radar before but he looks a powerful player. Some atrractive games in round 5 coming up. The Board 2 clash between Jon Hawkins and Romain Edouard stands out. Then there is Adam Ashton on board 4, Ezra Kirk on board 6, the usual suspects Hebden, Gormally & Arkell on 7, 8 & 9 plus further English interest with Bellin on 7, Constantinou on 9 and Jake Liang on 11.

Big chance for Jonathan Hawkins today. I don't recall him ever beating someone as strong as Edouard (2659) before - although I am sure that someone will point it out if he has done.

I'm sure you are right, although he has had plenty of draws with them.
