Today's Sunday Telegraph & searching for crashed aeroplanes...

Takes back to Bob Mitchell searching for bodies 35 years ago on Antarctica.

Bob was a policeman & chess player from New Zealand & retired to Britain in Kent a few years ago.

Anyway Bob used the international Chess Correspondence system of numbering a grid on the crash site to assist with cataloguing individuals to body parts. This system is still in use today for this type of incidents.

"Erebus: Into the Unknown" out in cinemas on 9th Jan & dvd/on demand on 12th.

Did anyone catch this article in the Guardian? http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfre ... reme-sport

Sounds familiar! Though at least I’ve given up the fags and do attend the gym a couple of times a week

I'm sure that article was mentioned somewhere on here, but I can't find it so maybe not (maybe in a thread on the Olympiad?). Maybe someone hid it behind a shortened URL?

It's earlier in this very thread.

I couldn't find it by search either, but it was at the end of the Olympiad, so I just scrolled back.

Thanks, though the post where the 'extreme sport' article is mentioned is yours a few posts later here:

I should probably have prefaced that url with "Stephen Moss in the Guardian's Comment is Free".

Yes... We all carefully sprinkle our writings (if they can be called that) with relevant keywords so they can be found again months or years later, don't we? Sadly, I'm probably not being sarcastic here. There must be a word coined somewhere for that phenomenon of searching on a computer or the internet for something you are sure is there but you aren't quite using the right search terms.

This story about South Africa’s first Grandmaster, odd URL not withstanding,

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/j ... ells-plain

is on the front page of the Guardian’s website right now.

This is from the BBC's report on the death of Tangerine Dream's Edgar Froese:
The group later signed to Virgin after Froese had undertaken "several bouts of chess on Richard Branson's houseboat on the Thames".
No idea where the quote within the quote is from.

A chess set entrepreneur appeared on Dragons' Den:

At 41 minutes into the episode, apparently. Not sure for how long.

Further to the Dragons Den entrepreneur, dragon Piers Linney claimed to have played board 2 for East Lancashire. Can anyone confirm this? I'm guessing this would have been a junior match - nothing wrong with that, but it would be interesting to know how strong he was/is.
chessplayers are crazy when it comes to chess
but that's not to say they're not really good blokes

Perhaps one place to start looking would be http://www.elca.org.uk/artman/publish/c ... x_30.shtml

But note that East Lancashire is not the same as Lancashire county and playing for the county doesn't mean you are a strong player, although Lancashire is probably a different matter. As a junior I played for the Durham county adult side and wasn't aware that there was any organized junior side.

Note also that you don't have to be very strong to be thrown up the board order by a team captain with a sense of humour. I'm sure I remember George Miller, the Somerset captain, putting an 11 or 12 year old Jack Rudd up on one of the top 5 boards for a match just to see how he would get on.

More humouressly, we, the South Bristol boys, had an open bet with Steve Boniface (a Grendel player probably about 160 BCF) for Somerset matches that if he lost he would buy us a round and if he won we would pay his bar bill - all drinks plus food. Well, for one Wiltshire match George put him on board 3. He came storming round "Bets off, lads! That's really not fair". Of course he went on to beat his much higher rated opponent. We ribbed him mercilessly down the pub but only bought him the one pint.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

The 12-year-old Jack Rudd was graded 168 at the time, and was up on the top five boards by right. :D
