Re: Chris Clegg
Barry, the competition format was four all-play-all sections whose winners entered a knockout stage. The semi-finals and finals were decided by two games for each match. John Nunn defeated Mike Healey in one semi-final while Gavin Wall beat Russell Granat in the other. Nunn won the final 2-0 although he looked to be in trouble in the following game before recovering to demonstrate his superior skill in rook and pawn endings.

And here's the second final round game:
We should also thank Robin Haldane who recorded the moves in the final games.

What you needed John was a Giant Bishop!John McKenna wrote: At such close quarters my bishop continued to be a pedestrian prelate wandering aimlessly in the confines of the white tiles while the knight was hopping madly from black to white, and back, harrying my poor monarch into a hole in the ditch of the H-file.

Thanks for pointing that out, Clive.
I think of that bishop of mine more as a redundant verger - let that be a lesson to me.
