Some lovely feedback. I hope that the knowledge that even teams who came near the bottom still greatly enjoyed the event will encourage even more schools to take part next year.
Neil
Thank you for an excellent tournament. The girls had a really good time and are inspired to improve for another year.
Despite their final score, they did have some further games which could have gone either way and I think they all some some good games during the day where they had chances.
Hello Neill
Just wanted to say thank you so much for a well organised event at a fabulous venue.
I know a lot of work goes into making these events run well and to ensure that all the schools, children and parents have a good day. The team and parents certainly had a great day!
Many thanks also to Eton College and Mr Moston - in particular for the hot drinks and the tour. Tea and coffee on tap was very welcome. The tour was an amazing insight into the history and workings of the college.
Good morning Neill

Once again, many thanks for your hospitality yesterday. In amongst all of the demands of such a tournament both you and Justin made us feel extremely welcome.
Many thanks Neill for yesterday
A super organised day well done to you and your team.

thank you
Dear Neill and Justin
On behalf of the teams thank you very much for all you did to make Sunday’s event so much fun. The players enjoyed their chess and socialising and their families enjoyed their day out in Eton and Windsor. The friendly atmosphere generated by Eton as a venue and the relaxed competitiveness of the chess made it a great day for everybody.
It was nice to spend time with the reserves as well who were not great players and didn’t win many games but were able to play a real part in the tournament and have fun. Next year I want to also bring a team from a local comprehensive as watching the chess at the bottom end confirmed a weak team would still have a good day.
Thanks Neill, the students very much enjoyed the day and are enthused to work harder at their chess!
A great day.

Just a few days until the 2016 event.
The good news about school chess is that there are 50 teams from 41 schools taking part - over 300 players.
Some are travelling from as far afield as Ireland, Somerset, Hereford, Lincs and Birmingham.
The top teams have a total grade (6 players) of over 1000. Others are playing in their first tournament.

Are many of these State schools; and if not I wonder if Neill sees any glimmers of hope in persuading more of them to compete in this event?

Over a third were state schools:
31 independent, 13 state selective, 5 comprehensive, 27 boys school, 17 mixed, 5 girls.
The leading state school was mine, Wilson's, who were 6th. The leading non-selective state school were Chepstow who were 17th.
So there is a glimmer of hope.

Neill,

Quick question for you:

Do you know of any state secondary schools who take an external provider to come in either during the school day or afterwards to run and manage a chess club and teach children?

It is interesting to compare and contrast this with the situation for state primary schools...

None spring to mind. But it is not just chess. It would be true for almost all co-curricular activities - outside providers at primary school but not at secondary school. The main exceptions I can think of are music tuition and sports coaches who are still used in secondary schools.

Thanks very much for that - little acorns etc.
