Chris Ward and Simon Williams have drawn their games. No other upsets yet, though William Jones is still holding against Arkell. Oh, hang on, a few upsets on the lower boards, but that is more to be expected.

What is happening in the final position of the Ward/Edge draw anyone got an engine on that one?

Chessbomb engine claims a draw.

25... Nef6 26. g4 Rd5 27. Qc4 Qa8 28. h3 g5 29. Qc3 Rc8 30. Qa1 Rdc5 31. Qd4 Rd5 32. Qa1

Not sure how long the engine was running on that, though. All other moves seem to let White win, so Ward should maybe have played on?

some good efforts on the live boards by some of the weaker players today, and both draws fully merited.

how exactly does one find the results of the lower boards? (direct link would be much appreciated).

They are using the chess-results server, perhaps for the first time, but unlike the Major Open, no-one seems to be inputting results as they arise. So we probably aren't going to find out the lower board results until they run and publish the Round 2 pairings sometime later this evening.

Zhang has lost now but he put a good fight.
Meanwhile over at Biel, Mickey Adams (White) probably missed a complicated middle-game win against Rapport just before the time control. Now he has to win R, h-pawn and light-squared bishop against rook and b-pawn. This means he cannot exchange rooks except on g6 (or maybe later g7) when his pawn would recapture.

I have been following it with the Lomonosov tablebase. He was on a winning path towards a mating net but must have missed something (easy to do) so now is trying blockading the Black pawn with his king. It's still winning but he needs a pawn move or capture no later than move 104 and he's used up half his 50-move allocation already. I think he's hoping Black will play ...b4-b3 which starts a new count.

LATER: neat trick, Mickey's point in marching his K to b3 is revealed. He has managed to win the black b4-pawn which probably could have been prevented. He now has 50 moves to set up a mating net. This should bring him to +1.

The Sniper author has a reputation for throwing everything at the opponent. David on the other hand has a reputation for living dangerously both on the board and with his time handling. That said, the rating favourite will probably win with an Arkell style grind.

Morning friends

I am looking forward to watching Marcus Osborne V Jonathan Hawkins GM. Marcus should put up a good fight Peter learnt a lot from playing him. One year he played Marcus at coulsdon chess and the game finshed at midnight and then the pair of them went into the back room to look though it. Howard said turn the lights out out when you finshed! It was also funny that both of then went to the back room to analyze the chess game becuase no one else was left in the chess club so you could have looked though it any where in the club.

As for who i like to win the championship it has to be Nick Pert GM he was Peter coach for a while.

I was watching Osborne's game live yesterday - came down to a K+P ending and I thought White missed some draws towards the end? Can't he play b4 before trying to grab the h-pawn? then he always gets back to a1?

Obviously this was on-screen, at home with no pressure - but what was played seemed to lose trivially.

It looks like Marcus was lucky and White could have won with 40 Ke4.

It looks like Marcus was lucky and White could have won with 40 Ke4.

Lot of people used to say Peter was lucky when he won never his good play! You can go over a game loads of times but it will not change the result.

Are we really going to have 11 different threads, one for each round. Isn't it more normal to have one thread for all the Championship games, particularly as discussion may overlap between rounds? Carl did suggest one thread for each day in his comment here:

@ Peter - it was just casual interest rather than casting any aspersions at the players ... heaven knows what people would find if they followed some of my games from previous events. I remember at least one comedy of errors with an unsound piece sac from Sheffield, 'fortunately' I think I was too far down to be on a live board ....

I do like to find 1 or 2 games that grab my interest from lower down the field to have a proper look at myself, rather than following Andrew's commentary ... and I like K+P endings - there's normally far more to them than you would expect from a casual glance ...
