The strongest masters open in the world, no English entries....
http://en.chessbase.com/post/welcome-to ... -open-2015
The minimum rating is 2300. The event is in school and university vacations, and starts a week after the end of the London Classic. Why no entries from ANY of (listing only the top active GMs and the most promising qualified young players/juniors)?
Adams 2742
Howell 2705
Jones 2619
Hawkins 2563
Fernandez 2474
Zhou 2463
Adair 2446
Haria 2445
Jackson 2369
Merry 2369
Sanders 2326
Harvey 2320
Kirk 2315
The closing entry date is 30 September, that's next Wednesday.
Remember what Kasparov said about English chess....

why no English players? here are 20 good reasons
Top 20 participants

and you would need to finish in the top 10 to win $2000 which would hardly cover expences
simple maths

David Howell is playing in Qatar.
How can an event be open, if the minimum rating is 2300? It is a magnificent event, but not open. Trardewise Gibraltar has that honour.

It satisfies my definition of an open. Anyone with the remotest chance of winning a prize is allowed to enter.Stewart Reuben wrote:David Howell is playing in Qatar.

Ah I see, that's why they didn't let me enter last year.NickFaulks wrote:It satisfies my definition of an open. Anyone with the remotest chance of winning a prize is allowed to enter.Stewart Reuben wrote:David Howell is playing in Qatar.

I suppose it's a "Masters Open" rather than an "Open" like Gibraltar given the high minimum standard to get in. I hadn't previously realised that Ravi had managed to push his rating well beyond necessary IM standard, towards candidate GM level.Mick Norris wrote: David Howell is 18th seed, Ravi Haria 104 out of 155

Ravi gained 104 rating points at the Politiken Cup beating Gawain and drawing with GMs Tarjan & Aagaard

I still haven't registered for the FIDE site yet. I was wondering where most of the gain for Ravi's rating came from?
Recent results are still visible:
http://ratings.fide.com/individual_calc ... 2015-09-01
He lost 18 rating points at the European Youth Team Chess Championship, but gained 97.60 at the Vienna Open and 104.40 at the Politiken Cup. That is a gain of over 200 for the September 2015 list. He just missed out in appearing in the October Chessbase report on those climbing the rating list. He just missed out on getting into the top 100 in the World for juniors, and is currently number 23 in the world in the U16 section!
EDIT: Does anyone else get the feeling that some of those FMs or untitled players in the Qatar Masters may be contending for norms? And maybe some of the IMs might be contending for GM norms? Or is this simply too strong a field for any but the most talented to seriously consider getting norms?

It looks perfect for norm opportunities. Obviously you still need to perform at the required level but pitfalls trying for norms can include not playing enough titled players or face a high enough average whereas neither of those will be an issue here.Christopher Kreuzer wrote:I still haven't registered for the FIDE site yet. Christopher I don't think you understand the system. In a 9 round event.
For a GM norm you have to perform at 2600+ level against a minimum field of 2380. Also a minimum of 3 GMs and 5 titleholders. In Qatar people don't have to worry about meeting the quota of foreigners. There will be plenty there.
Thus 2380+ field requires 7/9. In Qatar it would be impossible to make that score and yet meet such a weak field.
2435+ 6.5/9.
2476+ 6/9
2521+ 5.5/9
2558+ 5/9
2601+ 4.5/9
2644+ 4/9
2681+ 3.5/9
For the IM norm, just knock off 250 from the average rating. Thus IM norm 2431+ 3.5/9. 35% is the minimum score for norms.
Ravi Haria being so young has k=40. This means his rating changes over in 19 games. Thus is is very volatile. My k factor is 20. A player 2400+ it is 10, then it turns over in 75 games, which is impossible to play in one month.

Haria's k is no longer 40, it is 10, because his rating has gone over 2400.Stewart Reuben wrote:Ravi Haria being so young has k=40. This means his rating changes over in 19 games. 75 games isn't quite impossible to play in one month, but you need to be doing things like playing in one tournament with a morning session and one tournament with an afternoon session and one tournament with an evening session simultaneously, which sounds like an excellent recipe for losing ridiculous quantities of rating points.

Well, I have full confidence in your ability to do it on the basis that you would only be spending half an hour or so on each game.

Sadly, though the modern Laws do not permit players to play rated games simultaneously.
