Re: British Knockout Championship
Owing to the length of the game the start of the return game has been deferred until 1545. The other game started at 1530 as scheduled.

Re: British Knockout Championship
Kind Apologising for quibbling with such a great event but the schedule for the quarters/semi's really is very compressed - and at least a bit brutal - when compared to the final.
Presume something like the sponsor wanting a 6 game final running in conjunction with the main classic.

Re: British Knockout Championship
Agree with that, a 4 game final with an extra day for each round would have been my choice, but much better to have this event than not!!

Did Gawain really play 12. b3? What's the idea after 12...Na5? 13. Qh4 I guess, but I'm not even close to making it work :/

A cunning ploy to get David thinking?Simon Ansell wrote:Did Gawain really play 12. b3? What's the idea after 12...Na5? 13. Qh4 I guess, but I'm not even close to making it work :/

There might be some tricks, something with 13. Qh4 and 14. e4 + Ng5, but I don't really believe it. Might just be a calculated gamble given the match situation, the opening probably hadn't gone as planned.

Well, now we have a roughly equal endgame (maybe White has a tiny edge) and I confess to not having understood any of the last 5 moves

I suspect that black's choice was influenced by the match situation, on another day he may have grabbed the exchange.Simon Ansell wrote:Well, now we have a roughly equal endgame (maybe White has a tiny edge) and I confess to not having understood any of the last 5 moves

Looks as though David should be able to draw at least ( move 56).

Not much danger of more than a draw. I'd still be a little concerned as Black.

You are right to be concerned. David is losing now (move 89)

Re: British Knockout Championship
Indeed. The move that did the damage was 69...Ra3 either overlooking 70 Ra2! Rxa2? 71 Bd5+ or else that after 73 Rxa6 in the game continuation, the passed pawn stays alive because of 73...Rxb4?? 74 Kc5+.Chris Rice wrote:Carlsenesque by Gawain
It was very hard for Howell to survive in his habitual blitz mode with no time being added after completing 40 moves.
When do the playoffs start?
