Re: Greatest English Chess Players
But what of his games? He is not even in any databases from what I can see, if it is the same man, and his tournament results were fairly lacklustre - seems like atkins was the stronger player of that generation.
I have updated the list and made a place for Jon speelman for now, but need a bit more of a case if blackburne is to get up there

Lose one queen and it is a disaster, Lose 1000 queens and it is just a statistic.

I doubt that very much.Joey Stewart wrote:... nobody has ever attempted to create such a list
Anyway, I'd put Nige top. He fought his way to a world championship match. Nobody can say anything similar (I dont count Adams' FIDE achievement as being in the same league).

Nigel is certainly a strong contender, given his 30ish years in the world top 100 and various successes, but unlike some of the "what if" matches from this list we have actual games against Adams and he seems to come off slightly worse in their encounters.

Which world champions did Atkins and Hodgson beat? Or Jones, as yet? Has David Howell beaten one?Joey Stewart wrote:JustinHorton wrote: World Junior Champion for instance. The win against Karpov was also a sensational result.
I think everybody on the list has a win against a world champion to their name.

I have never doubted that he was a fantastic grandmaster who inspired generations of great british talent but this list really is about the cream of the cream and I just think that some of the other players feats slightly outshine him.NickFaulks wrote:You really are on thin ice.Joey Stewart wrote: Well miles really didnt actually acomplish a whole lot

Come to that, which world champions lost to Staunton? I was under the impression he died a dozen years before the title existed.

Provided you are consulting a database that contains games from 1860 to 1914, you should find hundreds. He was a participant at the 1895 Hastings for example.Joey Stewart wrote:He is not even in any databases from what I can see

I would have to do a little research on that for you. Justin.
In the meantime, why dont you give us your version of the top 10 list and see how it compares to mine.
