Any other ageing patzers out there wondering if 24. f5 ?! might have been worth a punt, rather than the slightly uninspiring 24. Qe3? Perhaps someone with an engine can advise the best way for black to refute it.

It was worth a try, I agree.AustinElliott wrote:Any other ageing patzers out there wondering if 24. f5 ?! might have been worth a punt, rather than the slightly uninspiring 24. Qe3? Perhaps someone with an engine can advise the best way for black to refute it.

Other British players are Bogdan Lalic and Alan Tate of Scotland with Jovica Radovanovic in the B Section alongside several IMs.LawrenceCooper wrote: 1.5/3 so far and a fourth IM in round 4 http://www.chess-results.com/tnr207899. ... 984&snr=92

I don't think there'd be much diff between the outcomes of the moves 24.Qe3 and 24.f5 because W already stands worse due to the loss of the G-pawn.LawrenceCooper wrote:It was worth a try, I agree.AustinElliott wrote:Any other ageing patzers out there wondering if 24. f5 ?! might have been worth a punt, rather than the slightly uninspiring 24. 24.Qe3 may be "slightly uninspiring", however, it could have been a thematic attempt to hang on by keeping control of the white squares, but... Rd8 25.Bc2 gave too many up! 25.Be2, instead, would have kept fighting for the white squares, though B would still stand better, winning probably.
24.f5 "a punt" that would've attempted to wrest control of the game by active K-side play, but lack of control of the square e4 tells... exf5 25.Nxf5 Be4+ 26.Bc2 Bf8 27.Nd6 Bxc2 28.Kxc2 Bxd6 29.exd6 Qe4+ 30.Kb3 Rd8... should be winning for B, too.

Brian is currently on 2/5 but fairly well placed for a norm chance having already played enough titled players http://www.chess-results.com/tnr207899. ... 984&snr=92

Now Brian Tarhon is on 3.5/7 with a 2439 performance, having played two GMs and four IMs. He probably needs 1.5/2 in the final two rounds for an IM norm,.

He might be able to do it with 1/2 with a kind last-round pairing; my mental arithmetic puts the required last-round opponent for that to work at 2549.Leonard Barden wrote:Now Brian Tarhon is on 3.5/7 with a 2439 performance, having played two GMs and four IMs. He probably needs 1.5/2 in the final two rounds for an IM norm,.

It would have to be a VERY kind pairing. The only player who fits the bill ratingwise and who could be on 4/8 is GM Viktor Erdos, and he, like Tarhon, would be due for Black in round nine.

There are four more players who fit the bill and could be on 4½/8, though. So if Brian wins his round 8 game, he could get one of them and only need to turn up.Leonard Barden wrote:It would have to be a VERY kind pairing. You are right, I miscalculated. The situation is that 1, 0.5 or 0.5, 1 will secure the norm, 1, 0 could do it but 0.5, 0.5 would need Erdos in the final round and 0,1 would fail.

Sadly he lost in round 8 so whilst still a very impressive performance it won't be enough for a norm. It does look a great event to play in though for norm seekers and even a quick glance at the results identifies at least a couple of successful norm seekers.Leonard Barden wrote:Now Brian Tarhon is on 3.5/7 with a 2439 performance, having played two GMs and four IMs. He probably needs 1.5/2 in the final two rounds for an IM norm,.
