Is it just me or are others also finding that the website, other than showing some of the games, is as good as dead?

I think there are no games in progress - they start again at 2:30pm.

Yes but my point earlier was that the http://www.glorneycupchess.org/tournament_glorney.htm website, which one might reasonably expect to contain team names etc, is in fact no more that a template omitting any 2016 data. The only area that is in any way "live", at time of writing this, is the live games - which, in turn, don't include all the games. One has to go to the chess-results website to uncover what is actually going on. Leaving that to one side, I'm curious (and I won't put it more strongly than that in a public forum) as to the selection criteria for the England teams.

There's a lengthy document at
http://englishchess.org.uk/Juniors/play ... on-policy/

The Glorney and associated events are classified as "Developmental" which is defined by
DEVELOPMENTAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

These events offer a great experience in terms of gaining international experience and being part of an official England team with access to coaching from some of England’s leading players.
As to the Glorney Cup, Gilbert Cup, Robinson Cup and Stokes Cup 2016
Players may register their interest in this event with the Junior Director no later than 30th March 2016. There is no set requirement for an ECF grade for a player to be considered for these Cup tournaments.
It doesn't say how the teams will be selected in the event of more applicants than team places.

Fair enough, it may just be that some of the stronger juniors simply didn't register interest.

Now that the event is finished I'll just add that it seems to have lived up to its reputation, when hosted by the ECF, for being something of an operational disaster. Only a sense of tact dissuades me from enquiring who was actually responsible for organisation.

As regards final results, England A and B finished 3rd and 4th respectively in the Glorney, 1st (congratulations, girls!) and 5th in the Gilbert, 2nd and 6th in the Robinson, and 2nd and 5th in the Stokes.

Could you explain why you say the event was an operational disaster? There is nothing for example, in the report by the Irish team to indicate any issues, or was that politeness?

On the question of selection / availability, it is still school term time for many state schools, which may have had an impact. There are also quite a number of junior representative events around in the Summer, plus the upcoming British of course.

I was there and I didn't see any operational disaster.

I’ll try to respond first to Peter. As regards my reference to past history, the ECF stages this event every fourth year and either 4 or 8 years ago I was told by a well-placed source (I’m hard-pressed to remember whom after all this time) that the organizational history was poor. As regards this year, the indicators were as follows:

1. Virtual absence of advance publicity. John Higgs flagged the event up on this forum only on the morning it started. The “Meet the team” page on the ECF website became active only at the same time, or in the hours immediately preceding. Of course, the absence of advance publicity isn’t conclusive but it’s an indicator.

2. Non-operational website. The dedicated Glorney Cup website http://www.glorneycupchess.org/ was non-operational (except for selected live games) with many of the weblinks being dead – clearly not the intention, otherwise why have these links in the first place? Instead, one was referred to the chess-results website. Of course, this too isn’t conclusive.

3. England teams. I was contacted 4 days before the event began by someone involved with the England teams (and I’d like to remain on speaking terms with the person in question so I’ll call him or her X) who needed information about certain team members. With a well-organised event, that information should already have been to hand. Taken along with the absence of team identities on the website (point 1 above) it suggests that team compositions weren’t known to those who needed to know until very late in the day.

As to the Irish report, convention indicates that guests do not criticize their hosts.

Responding now to Andrew, I don’t for one moment disbelieve you. However, the fact that nothing was visibly wrong at Daventry Court isn’t inconsistent with matters getting resolved only by last-minute efforts. What I am suggesting is a prima facie deficiency in advance planning.

Congratulations to the 40 England players (and their supportive families), the ECF appointed coaches, the two Heads of Delegation, the arbiters and the live board / chess results technical staff.

A very successful and happy event.

We look forward to 2017
