A pedant writes: Ukraine, rather than "the Ukraine".
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

We can assume that the Syrian women are significantly stronger than their gradings. Having looked at Sarah's game where she found 51 d6, I decided not to look any further. We've all done it - you decide that position is a dead draw against someone you expect to beat comfortably and you think that anything will do. Then you discover that it's no longer a half point that you are losing but the full point.

Yes indeed, anybody can sit at home and pretend it could never happen to them. I would be interested to know the story of the Syrian team, you wonder how they managed to raise a side at all.

Bit of a shame really because I reckon the England camp must be really buzzing tonight, and hopefully it won't dull the atmosphere at all. I'm sure it won't.

Although probably Mickey and Nigel will be tucked up in bed by 8pm ;)

Yes, me too.

(I do know the Syrian men's football side plays its home games in other countries.)

I suspect that him being ill was rather more relevant albeit Malcolm's preference was to play Nigel against Li Chau anyway.

:D Thanks for that, Loz. Do you think that we will play the same four tomorrow - or will Nigel need a rest after possibly a glass or two tonight

On the basis of this thread England are getting on for as many captains as players in this event ;)

A joke? Hopefully.

Surely you would carry out checks after the game, not during? Presumably there are appeals being filed and so on. What do the regulations actually say about this?

The official Baku site is showing an England win in the rankings after Round 7!

England paired with India in Round 8 - might be much worse, I would have thought.

Maybe the ChessVibes tweet can be parsed this way:

"[Nigel Short] refused [an] anti-cheating check during game. Penalty is [and should be] forfeit [but this didn't happen]. Takes guts [which the arbiters didn't have] to turn England's 3-1 win over China into 2-2."

Hopefully that is what happened. Worrying.
