I am waiting for Svidler in a few days - that'll be entertaining.
I think the combo Svidler/Gustafsson is probably one of the best out there I think

agree on the c24 commentators.

Magnus playing an offbeat opening, Sergey equalising, playing slightly passively and then defending well is pretty much the pattern we expected

as is Scotland being a bit rubbish at football

He seems a popular flavour at the moment.
I don't dislike him but there are more interesting players out there who would be better in commentating and could offer more when the commentation needs to be filled with some non-chess stuff.

I would like to see Aronian to do some commentating.

Nigel is right with the squeezing twitter comment if you can see that.

I am watching Germany on the iPad (0-6 against San Marino with Gnabry on a hat-trick)

I was surprised that the account gets de-activated when updating some basic information!!!
Obviously all good and thanks for the speedy service!!!

On the topic of the footie, To be fair, as they both broke the rules on political symbols, both England and Scotland should be treated equally, and both docked all the points they won in todays football match :)

I like Lawrence Trent and Taniya Sanchdev as commentators, not too fussed on the current c24 pair, but happy enough with their coverage to have taken out a month subscription for a proper engine. Looks a bargain compared to €15 for a load of superfluous 3d bollox that doesn't even work. Also, c24 had moves before the official site :D

We know that Adams was a remote second last time round. Is that his possible influence, or have they got Julian to divulge some unused stuff?

There was always a suspicion that "the Soviet School of Chess" didn't understand the Tromp. That said, I gave it up after one game too many when I struggled with a lack of control of dark squares.

Had to highlight this from last night as Sagar Shah's analysis of game 1 included the following comment which I have to admit was an eye opener to me. In the full article Shah by way of example cites a superb game where Ribli beats Karpov:

"After some exchanges we reached this endgame position which is often known as the Andersson endgame. These are contrary to Fischer endgames. Ulf Andersson loved to play with the knights, while Bobby Fischer craved for bishops. In the above position, it seems like Andersson would be smiling. But that is not the case, mainly because, there are two open files - 'c' and the 'd' files. Black can exchange a pair of rooks and then park his rook on the other file. If we imagine a position where the knight is on d3 with the pawn on e2 and blocking the d-file, then White would be better here."

Ah yes, the significance of the pawn on e2 is interesting.

It also, perhaps, explains something I was wondering about yesterday. In Kramnik's last match against a computer (where he allowed mate in one in game two) he had built up a very good/winning? position in game one (though drew). He did this from a queenless middlegame position with open c and d files, I think Black had doubled f pawns again, and where he (White) had bishop and knight v two bishops. The computer was criticised for not exchanging a bishop for knight to reach a dead drawn position. Kramnik then forced the exchange of bishops to leave himself knight v bishop and was much better.

My thanks in advance to Roger for posting the game!

So I was trying to work out the difference yesterday. Perhaps it was indeed that he still had a pawn on e2? Also, I wonder whether Black may also played an early ...a5.

It's rarely the case that the first game is decisive, I guess they are just settling themselves down. I'm curious to know if that is the first time the Tropowsky has been played at that level, I suspect so.

Actually there's a fair record of new challengers really messing the first game up :) So fair reason for Carlsen to play like this even if he's planning on something more critical later, and a reasonably positive start for Karjakin.
