Catching the eye:

Nikolic v Carlsen
Seirawan v Grischuk
Agdestein v Karjakin

I think that the pairings which you found originally were just for test purposes.

Heh. Ganguly missed a mate in three against Carlsen. It was drawn.

Some eventful games including a draw for David and Gunina losing in round 1 of the women's event with white.

David won in Round 2 from a position where he turned down a three fold repetition with 19 seconds on his clock against 10 minutes - even with 10 second increments, that's pushing it.

Why was Carlsen on board 1 in round 2?

He seems to have a permanent place on board 1.

David Howell is playing really well against Anand. Possible upset here.

Update: Draw but good result.

Now David has Mamedyarov with the White bits - what you might call a tough tournament.

World Rapid (15 rounds) after Day 1:

1 Korobov, Anton (2714) 5/5
2 Aronian, Levon (2770) 4½/5
3-10 Pantsulaia, Levan (2622), Bok, Benjamin (2589), Li, Chao (2648), Vidit, Santosh Gujrathi (2643), Grischuk, Alexander (2767), Mamedyarov, Shakhriyar (2805), Melkumyan, Hrant (2736) 4/5

Melkumyan if you'll recall was the top seed in the London Super Rapid a week ago who Alex Golding (1948) drew with in Round 1. David Howell is in 32nd place with 3/5 so performing above his seeding at the moment.

Women's World Rapid (12 rounds) after Day 1:

1 Muzychuk, Anna (2568) 4/4
2 Gaponenko, Inna (2406) 3½/4
3-5 Kosteniuk, Alexandra (2553), Goryachkina, Aleksandra (2466), Lagno, Kateryna (2594) 3/4

Gunina is back in 13th on 2½/4. Still, its early days yet!

That's a bit like Manchester United playing towards the Stretford end at the request of Sky TV. No real harm done, perhaps, but this is supposed to be a serious competition, not an exhibition.
