The World Youth Championships starts today in Turkey. The absolutely amazing Chessdom starts is updating blogs every 10-15 minutes. Here is part of their latest blog

The seedings put the current modest standard of English junior chess into perspective.

Our two best prospects are Yang-Fan Zhou rated 2295 in the U16, seeded 28th, and Felix Ynojosa rated 2156 in the U14, seeded 29th.

Hopefully both will improve on that.

In my defence I had copied the results from a private source, beating the official website, and had not checked the spellings.
Also did not identify the specific 'James' in the results list.

After two rounds Yang-Fan Zhou in the U16, Ravi Haria in the U10 and Anna Wang in the girls U10 have 2/2. Felix Ynojosa in the U14 has 1.5/2, and the rest of the English players 1/2 or less, which I guess is about par for the course so far.

Yang-Fan is on the live games this afternoon, with a tough pairing against the No 7 seed, IM SP Sethuraman of India, rated 2447, 150 points above our player. Sethuraman was the silver medallist in the 2008 world U16 and this summer defeated Russian GM Alexey Dreev, the former world title candidate, in the Politiken Cup.

Yang-Fan lost after his Scotch Game misfired and left his b2 bishop barricaded by his own c3 pawn. He got some counterplay around the time control but the Indian IM scored precisely in a Q+P ending.

However round 3 was still very good for England. Ynojosa won to reach 2.5/3, half a point behind six leaders in the U14.

Ravi Haria beat an unrated Russian and now shares the lead on 3/3 with U10s from Serbia, Norway, Iran, Mongolia and Kazakhstan.

The star of the show was Anna Wang, who beat the No4 seed, a Russian WFM rated 1859, and now shares the lead on 3/3 with U10 girls from Ukraine, Slovakia, Azerbaijan and France.

Both Ravi Haria and Anna Wang will be on the live games tomorrow afternoon, starting 1pm GMT.

Entertaining draw from Anna Wang today, whose opponent played like a 190+ player in moving into an endgame one pawn up, then like a 100- player in converting it into an endgame two pawns down. I assume that Black's last move was 71...Kg5, rather than ....Ke5, and that does seem drawn. But Anna was clearly winning between moves 50-60 or so.

All interesting stuff. Who are the coaches for the squad?

I know Tom Rendle is there, not sure who else. Apparently Felix is still playing, but the live games for his section is resolutely failing to work for me, which is quite annoying.
