Garry Kasparov on "Desert Island Discs" Jan 28th
Garry Kasparov will be Kirsty Young's guest on "Desert Island Discs" at 11.15 on Radio 4 this coming Sunday, the 28th.
Which tracks will he choose? Perhaps he will go for "Two Tribes" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, "King of Pain" by The Police, "Killer Queen" by, well, it's obvious, or on a more elevated level, "The Dance of the Knights" from Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet".
Of course, he could select something by Chubby Checker.
"Put(t)in' On The Ritz" is unlikely to make the final cut.

I was a victim of a series of accidents, as are we all.

He made some interesting comparisons between life in the Soviet Union in the early 1980s and the West in a piece on the ChessBase site.Gordon Morse wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2018 12:00 pmGarry Kasparov will be Kirsty Young's guest on "Desert Island Discs" at 11.15 on Radio 4 this coming Sunday, the 28th.

That including smuggling back computer components readily available in the West but unobtainable in the Soviet Union. But was it not always so with Soviet GMs who were allowed to travel to the West, that they took orders from their colleagues on what to bring back?
Perhaps this will come out in the interview sections.

What are the odds on his luxury item being a chess set?

Low, I would have thought. He can do chess in his head. Mere mortals can make chess sets from whatever materials are to hand. Or am I missing the point of the 'luxury' item? Do people take satellite-connected (chess-playing) phones to desert islands now?Alex Holowczak wrote: ↑Thu Jan 25, 2018 3:16 pmWhat are the odds on his luxury item being a chess set?

Having seen his recent adverts it is very much like George Clooney smooth coffee machine charmer.
But going to be on a desert island he may put on the "smooth talking operator" for his luxury item as Kirsty Young.
Outside bet "Pussy Riot"
No chance on a Raymond Keene book.

From my earlier post 22 Jan
Looking forward to Garry's music choices. I expect one or two from chess the musical, nil of Nigel Short's music tastes.
A bit of Frankie (Sinatra or Goes to Hollywood). Some opera or even heavy metal (Ecstacy of Gold) and a piano concerto.
No glam rock. But a bit of 'Pussy Riot' will tie up with some of his activities.

Or Elton John's "Sacrifice" might suit Gary's style.

One of the songs Gary chose was 'Strangers in the Night'.
Luxury item was a telescope so he can study the stars and look for a rescue ship.
( I was also thinking he could turn it around and use it as a magnifying glass to start a fire. )

A fairly middle-brow selection, but I was fearing worse
