It looks as though the match result may depend on whether the Cambridge board 6 can defend an ugly ending with BN v BB. Even if he can't, a good performance by an outgunned team.

Not a bad effort but Oxford's winning score looks to be 5-3 at least.

And expecting an even stronger woman player next year! Perhaps they will field two women, which surely hasn't happened too often in Varsity matches?

Don't think so.

Isn't it likely to be 4-3 plus Lisa Schut's ending?

It is, my bad. When I last posted, the board five game - by far the most topsy turvy of the match - hadn't refreshed (at least, not on my screen) to show Black (Cambridge) was now winning.

Still, Oxford's four wins were quite comprehensive, so it wouldn't be the closest of Varsity matches, despite the score. It is curious though that the match scores seem invariably close, no matter what the disparity between the teams.

It has happened before. Melanie Buckley and Heather Lang played for Oxford in 2001.

Is Board 5 right?

Knowing the match was already lost makes it slightly more plausible.

I was thinking the other way, White would accept that his pointless efforts to swindle a draw were merely holding up the proceedings.
