That's a shame.
It was an inappropriate sexist comment with no relevance to the thread.

So not the other one that's just disappeared?

Carl

If you've deleted only one comment on this thread you've deketed one that was clearly neither sexist nor inappropriate but was very clearly relevant to the thread.

I found that decision bizarre and couldn't understand why the post had disappeared.

Your follow up 'explanation' leaves me even more mystified.

If it's Justin's comment, it wasn't sexist or inappropriate, it was an illustration of what he saw as the sexism and inappropriateness of certain other comments in the thread.

Then I must apologise to Justin without reservation clearly moderation on a phone early in the morning is not something I should be doing.

I deleted a duplicate and responded to two complaints at the same time.

Again I am sorry a quick scan read was insufficient in this case.

Am I allowed to propose that the ECF withdraw all funding from men's international chess and give 100% of the international budget to the women?

If we want to carry on feeling a warm glow that our game is in theory completely gender-neutral, that would be an incredible statement of intent.

It's not like we're going to run out of male players.

Am I also allowed to propose that we challenge every male player on the grading list to find the cleverest woman he knows and teach her to beat him at chess?

I wonder if, given the opportunity, ECF Council would approve Chris's appointment?

I thought the mood of the Finance Council Meeting in April was that they would like to see the position filled as soon as possible.

My understanding is that Chris. having been appointed, will have to seek election at the Annual Council Meeting in October. Council can elect another candidate, or opt for "None of the Above", should they so wish.

Some members of Council might raise their eyebrows at the appointment of a man. Some may wonder why a man who hasn't necessarily commanded the confidence of ECF colleagues in the past. Most will hope the appointment is of somebody positively committed to women's chess and no longer pushing other agendas having reflected on the lessons of the past.

I suppose he has from now to October to win an election fight against "none of the above", or even a named challenger. Was there a suggestion that the ECF Board had two potential candidates in mind for the vacancy?

Yes there was. If the other candidate was who I think it was, then I am very pleased that Chris Fegan has been preferred.

You could not make this one up.

The Board, having failed to find a suitable female candidate, decided to abolish the position. That met with a lot of opposition. not least from the SCCU, and the Board reversed its decision prior to the April Council Meeting.

That made it inevitable that male candidates would be considered.

I don't believe that Chris would have put himself forward for the position if he wasn't prepared to try to work with his prospective colleagues on the Board as currently constituted. Nor do I believe that the Board would have appointed him were it not satisfied that that was the case. Mike Truran's statement suggests as much.

Things may not work out, but I for one welcome this attempt to put the problems of 2015 where they belong - in the past.
