Re: Media comments on chess
""The game resembling a chess match" comments the BT Sport commentator as the half time whistle goes in the goalless Man U-Sevilla Champions league second leg."
Judging from the reports, it was Aronian-Kramnik...

Bad chess and bad drama. Six people shouting at each other for three hours. Would love to sit down with the musical score and a red pen some time.Kevin Thurlow wrote: ↑Fri Mar 16, 2018 1:53 pmNot sure if this counts, but https://www.eno.org/whats-on/chess/

It's always good to see a new prodution of the musical. Tim so oftwn changes the plot!
In NY the arbiter's part was elminated to make the musical shorter. Of course, as you would expect, that meant it ran only 6 weeks.

Not exactly contemporary but here we have Geoffrey Green, no less, writing of Raich Carter:
What a player! He was the master of the game, a chess champion, as it were
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Daily Telegraph Saturday Weekend Section Page 8.
There was an ad feature of offers supplied by the DT .
Oe was for Wood Burning Stove Perfected by CleArview. The picture featured a chessboard and set. I find it difficult to detrmine whether the board was the right way round.

Brochure received for Audley Cooper's Hill Retirement Village
THE PERFECT TIME TO MAKE YOUR MOVE
Illustrated by 3 crystal chess pieces, rook, king and knight on a board.
But with that caption, why no chess clock in the picture

I think that's pretty obvious. Given the target market the only thing worse than a chess clock would be an hourglass with the sand almost run out.Stewart Reuben wrote: ↑Tue Mar 20, 2018 12:43 pmBut with that caption, why no chess clock in the picture
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

In today's Times, in an article titled "Rock stars and their hobbies".
"Chess has an entire rock fanbase of its own. David Bowie was said to be very good, as is Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, while RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan has reached tournament level. A member of the Hip-Hop Chess Federation, RZA devoted a chapter of the band biography The Wu-Tang Manual to chess."

From the BBC Sport web page this morning "This was a more chess-like Joshua. The knockout artist Britain has grown to love was forced to show us poise over 36 minutes, although the result never really looked in doubt."

Re: Media comments on chess
My memory has been jogged. On Thursday 29 March on page 18 of The Daiy Telegraph, John Hemmings wrote an article headed 'Trump is winning the great game in Korea'.
In the 1990s an American official said, 'It felt like playing a multi-tiered chess game on overlapping boards'.
'For Russia, North Korea represents an opportunity. A long-time ally during the Cold War, it now plays the crisis like a poker plyer with few stakes in the game to gain best advantage for its position in Asia'.
I have long said, he biggest poker game of all time was the Cold War and the biggest single hand of poker was the Cuban Missile Crisis.

That's reasonable, but Reagan won the conclusive hand because he held a royal flush and put it on the table. After that the Soviet Empire collapsed like, you might say, a house of cards.Stewart Reuben wrote: ↑Sun Apr 01, 2018 1:49 pmI have long said, he biggest poker game of all time was the Cold War and the biggest single hand of poker was the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Maybe. But I have always felt the US simply kept raising the stakes until the USSR could no longer afford to play and folded.
Perhaps Nick is saying the same thing differently. In poker, being a more honourable game, you aren't allowed to keep raising the stakes until your opponent has to fold.

Re: Media comments on chess
Hardly worth mentioning, as it is only a token analogy with chess (in the headline and opening sentence):
Kim's next move: Reading the Korea chess game (BBC News, 28 March 2018)

Chess on Eggheads tonight:- In which activity have Wesley So and Fabiano Caruana been ranked in the top 3 in the world? (A) Drone flying, (B) chess or (C) Ice skating
The Challengers quickly ruled out figure skating, but then decided it was a trick question and opted for drone flying. I guess if the question had used Russian-sounding names, they might have got it.
