I've been baffled by the performance of both Kramnik and Aronian. I would have loved to see Aronian take on Magnus, but we're not going to see that now. Is it just me, or has Aronian's play been frankly unsound?
Susan Polgar commented on both's performance on Facebook:
"I absolutely disagree with the approach of Levon by going for broke literally every game. It is too risky and it backfired big time. He needed to play sound chess, and take advantage of valuable opportunities when they are there."
"The absolute worst thing for Kramnik at #BerlinCandidates is the brilliant win with black against Aronian in round 3 to go +2 and tied for the lead.
He became overconfident & overestimated his position constantly. He simply lost all objectivity. In the next 5 games, he went -3!! It shows that even for the best players in the world, chess is objective, and no one can deny that fact.
This is why I kept saying that players need good seconds/coaches to keep them grounded in such an important event. And I say this from my own personal experience of playing in Candidates Tournaments, Matches, and World Championships."
