Not sure whether I should be looking at Kramnik's moves with admiration or horror.
There are lots of them; I assume he's made more moves than anyone else

Vlad has the best tiebreak of the 3 on 50% with 2 wins, Grischuk 1 and Ding 0 (a half-Giri with 7 draws  ); unfortunately, he's lost to the 2 players on +2 and +3, which is likely to matter more

TWIC round 7 report

At halfway, it looks like Fabi v Shak; Caruana has a half point lead, but an extra black (which may be an advantage as he has won 2 of his 3 blacks so far)

Mamedyarov now 9/4, which looks quite attractive.

Grischuk won against Kramnik in 91 moves to move to +1, a point behind Caruana and half behind Mamedyarov.

I will never get my head around Kramnik's performance in this tournament.

He is often displaying a notable lack of objectivity in his post-match comments, it seems.

Looks like that game against Caruana genuinely poleaxed him.

I've been baffled by the performance of both Kramnik and Aronian. I would have loved to see Aronian take on Magnus, but we're not going to see that now. Is it just me, or has Aronian's play been frankly unsound?

Susan Polgar commented on both's performance on Facebook:

"I absolutely disagree with the approach of Levon by going for broke literally every game. It is too risky and it backfired big time. He needed to play sound chess, and take advantage of valuable opportunities when they are there."

"The absolute worst thing for Kramnik at #BerlinCandidates is the brilliant win with black against Aronian in round 3 to go +2 and tied for the lead.

He became overconfident & overestimated his position constantly. He simply lost all objectivity. In the next 5 games, he went -3!! It shows that even for the best players in the world, chess is objective, and no one can deny that fact.

This is why I kept saying that players need good seconds/coaches to keep them grounded in such an important event. And I say this from my own personal experience of playing in Candidates Tournaments, Matches, and World Championships."

Relevant comments from Polgar there.

As for Kramnik's win against Aronian, yes, it will go down in the history of the game. But, really, was it all that good? The key move ...Rg8 was hatched at home, not found over the board. Thereafter, was it not just dreadful play by Aronian? Lifeless opening, playing into your opponent's strengths, queen move after queen move, the list goes on...

Perceptive comments from Polgar, especially about seconds keeping you grounded.

Round nine being played now. Three rounds between each of the rest days. The younger players (with the exception of So and Karjakin) are out-performing the older ones.

So then, three games with symmetrical pawn structures and basically equal, with one only result really at all likely on each board.

And Kramnik's game.

...and we're all cheering for Kramnik in this one, aren't we now!

Good to see Levon playing correct chess in this round, but way too late to salvage anything from this tournament. And it's a pity, because at his best I believe he is one of the few people in the world who could trouble Magnus.

I haven't actually see Karjakin's tweets, is he heralding the dictatorship in even stronger tones than usual?

He was never going to have the stability to trouble Magnus in any BIG match. In terms of both talent and temperament, he is a less extreme version of Ivanchuk. It is just a shame for his own self-esteem and happiness that this time, he isn't even contending at the half-way stage.

No idea. But I never allow the evidence to cloud my prejudice. Not with Karjakin. Not So either
