Hi.
Is it necessary for the board to be placed so that ranks with the White pieces have the labels 1 & 2 if the boards have such labels (some boards have no column/rank label)?

It isn't necessary, but arguably good practice. If you spot that it's wrong, it can niggle you for the whole game.soheil_hooshdaran wrote: ↑Thu May 24, 2018 12:07 pmIs it necessary for the board to be placed so that ranks with the White pieces have the labels 1 & 2 if the boards have such labels
Players taking their own digital clocks to league matches aren't unheard of, but exceptionally there was one local player who took his own board on the grounds presumably that he couldn't score if the sides of the board weren't labelled 1-8 and a-h.
I've also seen boards lent out for junior events come back with a-h and 1-8 written in marker pen.

Your vandals are more restrained than ours. If it's been used for junior chess, every edge is likely to be labeled a-h, h-a, 1-8, 8-1, 8-1 crossed out and 8-1 upside-down. Bonus points if opposite edges of the board have 1-8, in the same hand, running in opposite directions.Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Thu May 24, 2018 12:19 pmI've also seen boards lent out for junior events come back with a-h and 1-8 written in marker pen.

Speak to the arbiter/tournament controller & also ensure enough room for clocks & scoresheets.
It is nice if room if not it is a pain interrupting players getting up particularly where a medical condition requires you to get up every 20 minutes.

What does 'if room' mean?

Re: Board placement
I think "if there is enough room" was meant there.
