British Championship 2018
Re: British Championship
It's been a good game by Jack in Ghasi - Rudd. I was very impressed by Ghasi when watching some of his games in the English Rapidplay some months back. But Jack has made him look pretty lucklustre today. Likely he'll have won by the time I've finished this

Re: British Championship
It seems calling on my mental model of Keith Arkell was a decent strategic choice.

Down the boards, a nice draw for Daniel Young - 175 ECF - with IM Kolbus

Not yet clear how Gawain is going to win.Jonathan Rogers wrote: ↑Sat Jul 28, 2018 2:15 pmBut not many of the plausible candidates for the actual title will have already dropped points. Some GMs yes, but that is not the same. Says I.

But now it's zugzwang. I assume that shouldn't have happened.

Re: British Championship
Does anyone know why Irish IM-elect David Fitzsimons didn't show up for his game? Transport glitch?
Or the organisers overlooking a withdrawal email?

That is better but was there an actual game or a forfeit win?Nick Burrows wrote: ↑Sat Jul 28, 2018 7:12 pmChess-results has him winningTim Harding wrote: ↑Sat Jul 28, 2018 7:10 pmDoes anyone know why Irish IM-elect David Fitzsimons didn't show up for his game? Transport glitch?

Re: British Championship
There were no forfeits today in the Championship itself, apart from Sue Maroroa's zero-point bye.

Re: British Championship
It seems there are at least three British players named John G. Cooper.Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Sat Jul 28, 2018 11:45 amIt's another one. The Welsh JG Cooper is an IM and would in be the Championship or possibly the over 50.Andy Stoker wrote: ↑Sat Jul 28, 2018 11:31 amIs that *the* John G Cooper in the Major Open - doesn't have a Welsh flag?
The former Welsh international is indeed an IM. He will become eligible for 65+ events next year in fact.
There is an English player rated 1925+ (now gaining 9 points) who is 65+ and was on Stewart Reuben's team in the World Seniors earlier this month.
Chess-results says the JGC in the Major Open (FIDE ID 466912) is from Hull, and rated 2192 but he doesn't have a published FIDE rating (yet). He was born in 1963 if the FIDE database is correct (which isn't always the case for ages).

Re: British Championship
Just a chess24 glitch then. Good; Fitzsimons will be trying for a GM norm I think. Otherwise he would probably have entered the Irish Championships which starts next Saturday.IM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Sat Jul 28, 2018 7:24 pmThere were no forfeits today in the Championship itself, apart from Sue Maroroa's zero-point bye.

The ECF presumably had some reason for providing FIDE with that information.Tim Harding wrote: ↑Sat Jul 28, 2018 7:30 pmHe was born in 1963 if the FIDE database is correct (which isn't always the case for ages).

Re: British Championship
Thanks to Tim for making it unnecessary to comment on the many JG Coopers!
If you take the right-hand path up the stairs at the venue, you are greeted by a sign that says something like "Smoke machines will be used in this performance". I can't wait.

Congratulations! Han Yichen (184, NED, Forest Hall Newcastle) on becoming British u-11 Champion. He knocked over Rajat Makkar (190, FRA, Reading) in this morning's final round to finish 6/6

Re: British Championship
Yes but in my experience some years are way out for Irish players - after we approached them for availability on senior teams and they turned out to be considerably younger. While one player on our 65+ team this year was originally down as born decades later.NickFaulks wrote: ↑Sat Jul 28, 2018 7:49 pmThe ECF presumably had some reason for providing FIDE with that information.Tim Harding wrote: ↑Sat Jul 28, 2018 7:30 pmHe was born in 1963 if the FIDE database is correct (which isn't always the case for ages).
So it's probably the same with other federations. Especially when there are players with very similar names there is always some doubt until it is verified.
