It's been getting secretive. Llandudno was announced at the end of June 2016 and announcements in June had been commonplace as it enables publicity to be in place at this year's event for the next year's event. Hull 2018 was announced some while, months even, after the 2017 Congress. It had however been a rumour before that.

Re: 2019 British
I believe finding a suitable venue gets harder each year as less and less places are available for free, something that was quite common in the 1970s. Of course chess players who refuse to live in the real world think that such venues are plentiful or (worse) that it somehow works like the Olympic games and four cities are currently bidding to host the British.
I'd happily go back to Torquay but the two I've enjoyed the most (out of five, I'm hardly the veteran some people are) have been the Welsh ones; Aberystwyth and Llandudno.

Aberystwyth had the advantage of being university based, so rooms were available on the campus. The actual playing area was too small by normal standards with the result that there were no demo boards for spectators or even space set aside to watch the top games.Andrew Zigmond wrote: ↑Tue Jul 24, 2018 11:35 pmhave been the Welsh ones; Aberystwyth and Llandudno.

One of the problems with a different venue each year is that you have to go back to square one and can't predict how things are going to pan out until those 900 odd chess players walk through the door.
My reasons for enjoying Aberystwyth had a lot to do with a sizeable and affordable hotel room right on the coast. So not chess related as such but an incentive to return.

The room at Aberystwyth would have been fine for an e2e4 or 4NCL Congress of around 100 to 130 entries. Trying to cram in a British Championship, Major Open, Seniors Championship and afternoon events just didn't fit if you wanted the usual staging with seating and demo boards.Andrew Zigmond wrote: ↑Wed Jul 25, 2018 12:06 amOne of the problems with a different venue each year is that you have to go back to square one and can't predict how things are going to pan out until those 900 odd chess players walk through the door.
At least on paper it's more or less the same team running it every year, Aberystwyth suffered from the decision making being taken by those who had not previously been responsible for venue decisions.

Gossip in Hull is saying Brighton. Don't know exactly where.
If true, it would be the first British in the SCCU since Canterbury in 2010.

The PDC runs a £15m global tour, funded by corporate sponsorship and TV rights deals.John Reyes wrote: ↑Thu Aug 02, 2018 4:28 pmit would be a idea to ask the ECF to tender someone to find Venues in the future for Events

But remember at the beginning, they only had one event on television, but what is stopping chess to do the same ?Alex Holowczak wrote: ↑Thu Aug 02, 2018 8:17 pmThe PDC runs a £15m global tour, funded by corporate sponsorship and TV rights deals.John Reyes wrote: ↑Thu Aug 02, 2018 4:28 pmit would be a idea to ask the ECF to tender someone to find Venues in the future for Events

The event was still funded by corporate sponsorship and a TV rights deal, and could rely on spectators paying for tickets when they found their venue.John Reyes wrote: ↑Fri Aug 03, 2018 6:07 pmBut remember at the beginning, they only had one event on television, but what is stopping chess to do the same ?Alex Holowczak wrote: ↑Thu Aug 02, 2018 8:17 pmThe PDC runs a £15m global tour, funded by corporate sponsorship and TV rights deals.John Reyes wrote: ↑Thu Aug 02, 2018 4:28 pmit would be a idea to ask the ECF to tender someone to find Venues in the future for Events
