Thanks, Jack. I don't think everyone will have seen or heard those views you mention, so good to be clear on that. Might at some point spark another debate on the value of female titles, but maybe not now.
They clearly do have a value - a WIM or WGM will often get free entry to a tournament that non-title holders would have to pay for.

Gawain also notes this was a strong tournament on his blog. http://gawainjones.uk/a-busy-august/
Heh. The things you learn. Gawain has a brother who is a stand-up comedian performing at the Edinburgh Fringe. :!: (well, a "spoken word comedy adventure", that might not be stand-up comedy)

Does anyone know what caused the change to the board two pairing in the last round of the British over 65 Seniors?

On Board one Kevin Bowmer 5/6 was paired against Geoff James 5/6.

On Board two Oliver Jackson 4.5/6 was due to play Tom Bimpson 4.5/6.

When I arrived at the venue Bimpson was shown as withdrawn and Oliver Jackson was paired against a player rated in the 1700's with a score of only three points.

This was a very strange pairing which gave Oliver Jackson an easy point and was very unfair to James and Bowmer.

Also when I finished my game I noticed Bimpson walking around the playing hall.

Any explanations would be appreciated.
I posted an item about this from my viewpoint here:

On the venue issue, perhaps it is time for the ECF to face reality and pay the going rate, else the statement of "we don't do school halls" might come back to haunt us.
2000 was in a school (Millfield) as was 2003 in Edinburgh. 2007 (Great Yarmouth) was in a Technical College, whilst 2006 (Swansea), 2010 (Canterbury), 2014 (Aberystwyth) and 2015 (Warwick) were in Universities.

The main hall in Aberystwyth whilst suited for a Weekend Congress was too small for a British, so facilities for spectators at the venue were dispensed with.

A good news and bad news sort of post. Shreyas Royal (on FB) on his Major Open experience:

"If you have a passion and courage then nothing else matters ,you will be successful ! It was my last British Chess Championship and I’m happy with my excellent performance gained 149 Elo’s ( 2115) which becomes in the World Ranking 2nd (Under 9 )just a few points behind the World No.1 and won the Grading prize ."
Just to follow up on this post it looks like its all good news now according to this Guardian article from Sarah Marsh today.

That is excellent news, and warms the cockles of my heart as much as the Oliver Jackson story.

Are full results and crosstables anywhere?

Another report (from Tim Wall) here:
By virtue of being on the ECF site, that makes the Brighton gossip "official".
Tim Wall wrote: So, another British is over, and we of course look forward to next year, when it may be back to Brighton, according to the whispers I hear.
According the ECF's Board minutes they are discussing the venue for 2020, so maybe that's Plymouth (or 2019 Plymouth, 2020 Brighton).

https://www.englishchess.org.uk/wp-cont ... h-July.pdf
ECF minutes wrote: Negotiations were well advanced for the 2019 BCC venue, but awaited final
confirmation of availability on the dates required. This should be clarified by the end of July. Early stage negotiations are under way with potential venues for 2020.

Now more than a week after the championships have finished, I notice that (unlike previous years) none of the games have been published for any of the five day tournaments (i e. Morning Open & below) or the weekenders. Was this a deliberate policy change or just finding that there wasn't enough resource to process these? Or maybe they will still appear at some later point?

I think the weekday tournaments and the weekenders will have their games published when they are all finished. (There wasn't enough resource to process these at the tournament itself; we were probably one game-inputter short.)

They will appear. They're going to be input this week.

I wasn't there because I decided not to be an arbiter/staff team member at this year's event, in order to let other people have a turn. I hadn't appreciated that this meant there would be a lack of games-inputting resource compared with previous years - or at least, I thought that those who remained would be able to manage without me. So I was the one game-inputter short that Jack refers to.

Tom Thorpe took them away with him though, and is planning to input them this week when time allows. I don't know when they will finally appear, but they're a work in progress, and will appear at some point.

I'd like to express my big appreciation for the efforts of the game-inputters. As an observer following the progress of friends and colleagues in the various Senior championships, I was delighted to be able to access play-thru game scores within a day or two of each round. That's good going. I'm grateful

Many thanks. It is an underappreciated task. It never ceases to amaze me that while, on many occasions, I can't interpet my own scoresheet, the inputter invariably can.
