Re: 2019 British
Nick Burrows >I would like to propose to simply hold the British each and every year in Sheffield...at the Crucible.
I obtained the venue free in Sheffield, albeit at the sports centre. I was told they said next time they wold require a hire fee.
I wasn't in charge in either Sheffield or Hull, so there was no opportunity to try an idea I have had. Both are substantial chess conurbations. Why not encourage locals to put up chessplayers cheaply, but nonetheless to everybody's benefit? In a way that was what was done for Edinburgh in 1985. There was one venue where we were offered 200 free rooms with local families and a free venue. I was very torn as it was a one-horse town. The Board decided against accepting the invitation.

There are loads of horses in Newmarket. There are none in Manchester.
I'm going Cartmel. (With fond memories of a debauched youth: err.. Could we afford a third round?).

Cartmel isn't really a "town", even on the most elastic definitions.

Sure this wasn’t a typo and Stewart mean to say it was a one-house town?

One horse town - a small town with few and poor facilities. There is even an Elton John song with that title.

Torquay again then.
The future of the Riviera Centre may be in doubt.

There was a similar story last time the British went there.

Wasn’t Torquay the venue for The Great ‘Can I Take My Own Sandwiches’ Debacle?

The original one was in Liverpool, but I think the guy surfaced for one of the Torquay Britishes and raised the point there as well.Jonathan Bryant wrote: ↑Wed Sep 05, 2018 4:38 pmWasn’t Torquay the venue for The Great ‘Can I Take My Own Sandwiches’ Debacle?

The issue but not the person also resurfaced at a Junior 4NCL and an e2e4 Congress, possibly also a BUCA event.IM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Wed Sep 05, 2018 5:34 pmThe original one was in Liverpool, but I think the guy surfaced for one of the Torquay Britishes and raised the point there as well.
Wasn't most or all of the Torquay discussion deleted? Whilst "sandwiches" as a forum search term gets lots of hits in various years, the Torquay debate isn't amongst them.
Unlike the Hull venue which was perhaps under a minute from cafes and supermarket chain local stores, the Riviera Centre is a little further from alternative eating places and food purchasing points.

Re: 2019 British
It was Torquay 2013 although I think it was more about the general principle than that specific British. Carl was eventually forced to first lock and then remove the thread altogether (taking with it some decent discussion about side events). I suspect these posts won't survive long either so I'll go into a bit more detail while I can.Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Wed Sep 05, 2018 5:53 pmThe issue but not the person also resurfaced at a Junior 4NCL and an e2e4 Congress, possibly also a BUCA event.IM Jack Rudd wrote: ↑Wed Sep 05, 2018 5:34 pmThe original one was in Liverpool, but I think the guy surfaced for one of the Torquay Britishes and raised the point there as well.

The discussion concerned a forum contributor who thought it was wrong that he wasn't allowed to consume his own food and drink in the venue. Which is a view he's entitled to although not one I (and many others) agreed with. However more serious was his insistence that a space should be provided for him to do so and it eventually transpired that he had been contacting the venue repeatedly to make his demands, causing considerable embarrassment for the organisers. Unable to take criticism from other forum users (despite happily dishing it out himself) he demanded the removal of the thread and I know Carl has had to remove subsequent references to the incident (while enduring pot shots from the short lived `official forum` where this user resurfaced).
In the `Refunding Entry Fees` thread where an aggrieved entrant stated that, not liking the response of the organiser, they would hassle the sponsor - this was the incident I referred to as a prior example of unacceptable behaviour.
