The final list of delegates with voting rights has appeared on the FIDE site. It does look very odd that Malcolm Pein will effectively be voting against himself.

It's only when I see this list in cold print that the full horror strikes me. For the rest of the time, I assume it cannot be true; it cannot be serious that this egregious absurdity should flourish. Egregious absurdity? What else does one call a state of affairs in which the combined votes of Russia, China & the USA can be cancelled out by the combined votes of Jersey, Guernsey & Guam?

You could call it the way just about every international body does things, with some minor differences regarding which nations are historically members.

Not cricket though, Bermuda cannot call the shots on how Test matches are conducted.

However the present international organisation of cricket is itself pretty controversial.

Nick's basically right: like it or not, and there are reasons to do either, one-nation-one-vote is pretty standard.

Not enough attention has been paid to how strange this is. Has there been a similar case?

Wasn't aware the ECF had announced how their vote was to be cast? Only that they have nominated Nigel which isn't the same thing.

The Yorkshire site archived what the ECF said.

http://mannchess.org.uk/YNotices/2018-0 ... ncy%20.htm
The ECF’s announcement on its website on 03/07/2018 noted that, “Regardless of its nomination [of Nigel Short], the Board will remain open-minded as to how the ECF’s vote is exercised in October.”

Looks like a pretty significant development Dvorkovich and Short standing side by side appear to be united:

"United in our belief that FIDE should support federations, and not federations support FIDE. United in our determination to bring transparency and the rule of law, and to root out cronyism and corruption."

It's very significant. They are united. They have the numbers between them. And they do intend to clean out the stables. Whether they can, remains to be seen. But unless there's another twist to come, Dvorkovich will be the new FIDE President in a few weeks time. Doubtless Nigel will have a role to play in the new order, along with some of his team. Let's hope he's familiar with the Russian proverb: first, you hug the bear; then the bear hugs you :)

I think it's always the shamelessness that is most entertaining about these contests
"Do you play chess?"

What’s the value of clean stables if you’ve sold the farm?

The metaphors are also good
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Because you might still want to ride the horses?

Short and Dvorkovich release further wedding pics, at the same time reminding Makropoulos that it's 'game over'
