1st Peter Poobalasingam Memorial Event
Sunday 9th September – Harrow High School, Gayton Road, Harrow HA1 2JG
Peter was a fantastic chess player drawing with World Champion Vishy Anand in a simultaneous display aged 8. Peter won the UK Chess Challenge Terafinal 2 times.
Peter’s first IM norm was at the Uxbridge Masters in 2009. Around this time Peter had a remarkable run 9 games against GMs without being defeated. Peter’s second IM norm was achieved at the World University Championships with one round to spare. Peter also had some fantastic results for Millfield School.
GM Matthew Turner recalls 2007-08 where Peter was “by far the best player in our team and in the final we were outgraded on every board, but his victory on board 1 clinched it for us.” We have no doubt Peter would have achieved IM and more but in the latter years of his life he was focusing on his career.
Peter also had a passion for helping juniors and for this reason this event is free for juniors – please email [email protected] for a coupon code.

Thanks John - we are very lucky to be able to offer lots of junior prizes and free entry to juniors - thanks to the generous support of the John Robinson trust and Natasha Regan.

Just been given a sneaky peak at the list of entries and we have 11 over 200, so it is a great opportunity to try and get a few big name scalps.

Hi, I'm providing the digital clocks (DGT 2010). Is the rate of play going to be one of the standard settings?
Thanks

Hi - time control is 20+10 seconds. We have published the list as off last week- up to over 50 entries now and a very strong field!

Nearly there. The top six boards will be broadcast live and hopefully there'll be some pretty exciting clashes with the field that has been assembled. I think there is still room for a few more entries if you fancy a trip down to Harrow on sunday.

I was unable to play today, but I managed to pay a visit to the tournament just now. May I express my appreciation and gratitude to Sarah, Matthew, Natasha, anyone else involved in organising the event and those playing? It is a fitting tribute to a popular, polite and fine man.

Looks like the live feed has stalled, which is a pity - I was enjoying Howell vs Basman!
