First reports his death, second his junior coaching at his local club.

Rudi travelled to the Guernsey tournament many times, in fact he only missed one of the 43 events, and played many English opponents (which is how I justify publication here). He was always cheerful and charming, as well as a tough opponent.

At one of the events, he presented me with a tie, which I now always take to Guernsey so he can see it once a year. Sadly he won't this year.

This is very sad news. Rudiger was always very friendly and he will be greatly missed by all the Guernsey regulars. RIP Rudi.

Rudi is - now, sadly, was - one of the (many) good things about the Guernsey congress.
If you want to see one of his very last wins, take a look at:

I almost dare not ask: is the final position actually drawn?

The version in the databases has 39 Qf1 played, after which there's a repetition with .. Qf3 etc.

Qf1 is forced as there are no checks and other moves allow ..Qf3 anyway with mate to follow because f2 is captured with check.

Thanks Mick.

I think that Rudi had more than 30 possible moves on move 36 and came up with the only one that drew. Roger is probably right. I think Rudi played Qf1 and said "draw?", and I just accepted (as that's what I was expecting) and forgot to write the move down.

You always got entertainment when Rudi was around!
