I see that one of the underperforming sides has been the host nation: the Georgian first team, seeded fourteen, is 38th, on the same points total as their second team, no higher-seeded team being below them.

Come on then, all aboard the Mcshane train..

David will be very upset to have not won that.
True. Makes it difficult for him to medal now. The team are unlikely to medal, I think (do you see what I am doing there?! :D ).
David is 3rd, now behind Kramnik; Russia play Italy tomorrow

Jorge Cori in first has had 5 successive whites, so maybe that's the plan for Peru

Will it be England-Norway? Bottom vs top floats? What a great opportunity if so.
Team pairings - Open
Round 9 on 2018/10/03 at 15:00
No. SNo Team Team Pts. MP Res. : Res. MP Pts. Team Team SNo
1 11 POL Poland 22½ 14 : 15 23 United States of America USA 1
2 4 AZE Azerbaijan 22½ 13 : 13 21 China CHN 3
3 5 IND India 22½ 13 : 13 21½ Armenia ARM 8
4 16 GER Germany 21 13 : 13 22½ France FRA 7
5 9 ENG England 19½ 13 : 12 23 Norway NOR 38
Indeed it is! And a rare objective opportunity for me to restate my view that the FIDE pairing system approach to floats is infinitely inferior to standard U.K. approach ;)
Don't underestimate the Wood Green Norwegians.

"Individual prizes are awarded on absolute rather than relative performance, so essentially they are excluded."

Thanks for that.

I very much doubt he has one, but if it inspires our team to glory, he should go out and get one.

Somewhat strange decision? (assuming no external circumstances)

She's played 7 rounds straight, so given the opposition, this may have seemed the last chance to give her a break

I'm a bit surprised Nick Pert wasn't selected today

Given that we presently find ourselves in the hunt for a very high placing, I am less surprised by the omission of Nick. It might seem tough on him, if he only plays three games out of eleven, but ordinarily he would not be in the squad at all. Fairly or unfairly, he had to win, at least once, when he played.

As it is, England is probably setting up a rather puzzling record. Can anyone remember any team having as many as 13/16 points, ie doing very well on the scoreboard after eight rounds, without having won a single game on the bottom board??

I assume that if England don't win today he'll play tomorrow and that if they win today but lose tomorrow he'll play Friday.

Are there any likely permutation of results where we win twice and play a team in the last round who are happy with 2-2? I think that or winning three times is what is needed. I suppose looking no further than winning today and seeing what the draw brings is safest.

Pity that we are unlikely to see Russia play the USA. Hope we still get some matches between the top three seeds (USA, Russia and China). Has that not happened yet?

Perhaps. But we really should win today; this is even better than playing Switzerland in the QF! I don't think the team will feel pressure of expectations, but rather smelling opportunity right now.

Or Sweden, whatever, you get the idea.

He's already played four times in eight rounds which isn't a bad return for someone significantly lower rated than the the top four.
