I'm expecting a just above par performance from England. John Nunn as captain is a big boost. I think Nick Pert & Mickey will be solid, Gawain and especially David will perform well. Luke unpredictable.

2 strong dark horses are Poland and Iran.

My prediction to win - China.
I thank you 8)
Ok, someone ought to acknowledge how well you did, Iran apart.

Nick was solid, all right. Only player not to win, only player not to lose. But mostly, only player not to play

Sorry to be slow here, but do we know who has won?
China and China
And that was with leaving Wang Hao and last time board one Wang Yue at home, and omitting goodness knows how many world number ones and former world champions from the womens team

Although it seemed for some of the tournament that England were trying to win matches with 3 draws and a win, the actual board points total was only marginally less than the other top teams. A drawn match with Russia would have taken them to third on paper, but presumably a more difficult pairing in the last round.

Adams played 10 won 3 drawn 6 lost 1
McShane played 10 won 2 drawn 7 lost 1
Howell played 10 won 6 drawn 3 lost 1
Jones played 10 won 4 drawn 5 lost 1
Pert played 4 drawn 4

Iran did well, finishing 17th while seeded 23rd

Nick missed Vietnam (7th, seeded 27), Sweden (11,32), Austria (14,35) and Uzbekistan (16, 36) though

The prediction I made after round 5 (when four teams were on 100%: Azerbaijan, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Poland) was easier to make but still came true:
You'd still bet on USA, China and Russia to power through at the end, wouldn't you?
I wasn't brave enough to predict the order in which they would finish, nor that Azerbaijan would fade so badly (finishing 15th after being seeded 4th). Other teams that fared badly: Israel (seeded 10th, finished 39th); Georgia (seeded 14th, finished 28th). Poland did well (seeded 11th, finished 4th) as did Vietnam (seeded 27th, finished 7th). Ditto Sweden, Austria, Uzbekistan.

I think the team that did worst relative to their seeding were Jordan (136, 74).

Best: Afghanistan (80, 143).

Women: Belgium (98, 57) were worst, Kyrgyzstan (48, 86) and Thailand (80, 118) best.

"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Is the full list of finishers available, and if so, where? I like to see how many of the top 20, top 30, etc, England played. (In Turin 2006, we only played one team which finished in the top 20. Ouch!)

See here. Our opponents finished: 124, 71, 63, 15, 33, 9, 41, 39, 29, 3, 21.

FWIW, the finishing positions for England in the Olympiads from 1976 (after the grouping system ended) to the present day are:

1976 3
1978 12
1980 6
1982 10
1984 2
1986 2
1988 2
1990 3
1992 10
1994 4
1996 4
1998 11
2000 7
2002 7
2004 30
2006 19
2008 15
2010 24
2012 17
2014 28
2016 9
2018 5

To put that in context, you also need to look at the European Team results as well:

1973 6
1977 8
1980 3
1983 4
1989 8
1992 3
1997 1
1999 10
2001 4
2003 17
2005 13
2007 16
2009 12
2011 22
2013 10
2015 10
2017 16

Obviously no performance comparison with Turin, I was just saying that it can be revealing to know. 19th doesn't have to be a bad result in itself, but really Turin was borderline terrible when one considers the opposition.
