Round 4 report from Peter Doggers. The Carlsen No 1 rating Watch has become a feature of this tournament but Ginger GM Simon Williams thinks it's all a bit of a fuss over nothing "All this panic and talk about Magnus' rating!? Numbers rise and fall... The fact that Magnus is willing to play in a social team event is bloody cool. Worst case, he is 2nd on rating list before The World Champs; just means he has to win to be 1st on rating after."

Nice to see Carlsen really enjoying the team victory yesterday.

Not really wanting to intrude on his grief too much, but Svidler lost again yesterday (with White, again - and from a won position, again)

It really is an awful run. Difficult to decide which loss is the worst one.

[OK, the loss by Svidler to Bauer in round 5 was the worst one by far.]
[Carlsen-Ding fairly sedate so far.]

Chessdom have some powerful hardware analysing the Carlsen-Ding game: Stockfish with 128 cores and Leela Chess Zero.

The world champion is fighting for survival. Will he make it?

If he can survive playing g4 against a player of Ding's quality that would be some feat.

An extra incentive to save it: "If Carlsen saves it, his team might win. Grandelius is winning,, the others drawing."

(38...Re1 is suboptimal from Ding, and Carlsen found 39.Nd3)

Oh, yes, quite possibly (after 29...Qe7).

And Carlsen failed to find 40...Kh2 and went Kf2 instead.
