The headline for the Letter from the Political Editor on page 3 of today's i newspaper is:-
May is backed into a corner in this game of 3D Brexit chess.
And in the article itself:-
She is playing the most complex game of three-dimensional chess as she conducts parallel negotiations with Brussles, her Cabinet, her own party and now the DUP.

http://commentcentral.co.uk/may-is-shor ... -kasparov/
Are there any winners to be discerned amidst the chaos of this capitulation? Well yes. M Barnier has shown himself as a sort of Kasparov pitched against Nigel Short in 1993. After much discussion about how that match should be “sequenced”, Mr Short agreed terms that were obviously injurious to his case. He then got thrashed. He would have been thrashed anyway, which is where the analogy perhaps reveals itself as imperfect.
It’s not fair to compare Theresa May to Nigel Short, obviously. Mr Short is a well-regarded grandmaster in his chosen field with a record of success generated by a natural talent. Mrs May on the other hand has managed – in the midst of the greatest opportunity offered to any UK politician in centuries – to continue to draw a salary.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

Re: Media comments on chess
I shall be playing chess in the evening on Thursday 18 Oct. As many know, I have a large collection of chess-related broadcast material. The One Show is not broadcast on catch-up TV. Could somebody please arrange to record it and, if there proves to be enough material, send me a copy?

Re: Media comments on chess
My better half was very impressed by the behaviour of the young chess players on the One Show shaking hands. Well done CSC.
It is a shame that this does not happen in every game of chess.
She has been speaking about the programme and we have agreed to a game of Chess on saturday!!!!

On BBC iPlayer it's on from about 2:30 minutes to 7:30 minutes into the recording. I don't think CSC was mentioned (even if it was something they organised).John Garnett wrote: ↑Wed Oct 17, 2018 7:13 pmThe One Show, on BBC1 at 7pm tomorrow (the 18th) will have a feature on CSC's work in Teesside

Re: Media comments on chess
I just a couple of minutes ago wandered downstairs where my wife has Radio Four on and the first thing I heard was the words "chess champion". It's Loose Ends and Sue Perkins (I think) was talking about playing and being summarily crushed by her late father. The programme began at quarter past so if you listen on iPlayer I guess it'll be seven or eight minutes in.

Today's Sunday Times has a large article on Fabiano Caruana, with a photo of him and a separate one of Carlsen. Naturally it centred on the forthcoming match. It had some material that I didn't know.

Closing Gambit - Prince Charles Cinema Leicester Square
There is a screening of Closing Gambit on Sunday 11th November at 18:30. Luckily, it’s a rest day in the world championship!
This new feature film is about the 1978 Karpov - Korchnoi match.
Directed by Alan Byron

Why did it take 40 years?
