Re: 2018 World Championship in London
So another rest day.
As I'm not in my chess team tomorrow I will have a chance of watching if it goes into third hour. That is whilst I'm cooking our meal. A 2 for 1 meal watching Burnley v Newcastle is not grabbing her attention. Though 2 young men playing in a box is (but I think she is thinking 'I'm a Celeb...') better entertainment.
It's a shame we have not got coverage for WCC in the pub or the type of London based coverage. So not surprising we are failing to grip the public.

"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Googling shows there is more than one Matthew Sadler/ Alpha Zero video (the one I saw was on games 1, 3, 5 and 7). I can’t wait to get home and watch the others.

Anybody paying attention would have seen me give the links a couple of pages back - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=9134&start=480#p224602.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

Re: 2018 World Championship in London
This used to be the procedure for the Armageddon tie-break in the US Championships - e.g. in 2016 - but it seems it has now been dropped, in favour of a 5 mins v 4 mins game (anybody know why?). In 2016, the Armageddon had a "base" of 45 minutes each. There is no reason why it couldn't be played at something like classical time controls, allocating something like the same total time as in the main games. Then if, say, M bid 50 minutes and F 55, M would have the choice of colour and 50 mins on his clock (plus the 30 second increment), whilst F had 150 mins (or maybe 100 mins, as in the normal games). At move 40, M would get an additional 25 mins and F 75/50 mins, and so on. There would be no need for rapid and blitz games, so that the winner would be the best at something resembling classical chess, rather than the better blitz player. Something like that would seem worth a thought.NickFaulks wrote: ↑Tue Nov 20, 2018 1:14 amThat idea is absolutely fair and has been around for a long time. It is dismissed by administrators as too radical.David Williams wrote: ↑Tue Nov 20, 2018 12:18 amWhy not have the two players make sealed bids as to how long they would be prepared to have to take black?

There's an article on chess24 about games 1 to 8 with the interesting quote from MatthewBrian Towers wrote: ↑Sun Nov 25, 2018 3:39 pmAnybody paying attention would have seen me give the links a couple of pages back - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=9134&start=480#p224602.
I’m afraid AlphaZero did not see that mate-in-36. To be honest, looking at AlphaZero’s big strengths, and also the fact that it’s not using endgame tablebases but doing it all by itself, it doesn’t surprise me too much, but it’s worth mentioning that this is something that it didn’t actually find.

Game 11 report on the World Chess site from Dylan McClain which included the line:
"...Though Caruana later blundered a pawn, it made absolutely no difference – Carlsen no longer had any reasonable winning chances. The players agreed to a draw after 55 moves."
Australian GM Ian Rogers responded: "World Chess' World Ch. Game 11 report puts negative spin on Caruana's well-considered decision to give up a pawn to secure a safe draw. According to their game summary "Caruana...blundered a pawn." Falsely tarnishing the quality of the match you are promoting is not great PR."

I don't know, maybe if they give the impression the players are fallible, people might tune in in the hope that they're not going to watch another draw.Chris Rice wrote: ↑Mon Nov 26, 2018 9:06 amFalsely tarnishing the quality of the match you are promoting is not great PR."
